Stop the motorcycle parking tax - 31st March

Postby Redrider » Wed Mar 11, 2009 4:26 pm

The biggest demonstration against Westminster CC parking tax for PTWs by riders and residents is due to take place on Tuesday 31st March 2009. Riders are coming from all over the country meeting at Trafalgar Square for 5pm before moving on to City Hall in Victoria Street for the scheduled council meeting at 7pm. Full details can be found at http://www.31st-march.com or http://www.notobikeparkingfees.com/events/ . To stop this scheme and prevent it spreading all riders should make an effort to get there. WCC have already forced the silencing of public debate on their public forum. We need your help to bring their scheme to an end. The alternative? You will have to register with every council where you want to park your wheels and carry a mobile phone with you all the time. No hoping off the bike and in to the shops for 5 minutes unless you want a £40 fine.
See you there.

Not happy with threatening legal action to close the discussion forum on http://www.notobikeparkingfees.com Westminster City Council have been issuing press statements claiming the committee have been using dubious tactics like threatening behaviour, and inferring the Police were called to the last rally to calm rebellious motorcyclists, in fact the Police came and mae sure all the motorcycles and riders were safe by stopping traffic for us.

Some campaigners have also received sexist comments from Cllr Susie Burbridge. http://notobikeparkingfees.list-manage.com/track/click?u=985284e0b13399291dc0147d5&id=6db9e7353c&e=2e3f2edcde.

Cllr Danny Chalkley has even pleaded for us not to disrupt the evening rush hour.

We need your support next Tuesday. Please join and stop this rip off tax. http://www.31st-march.com

I went to the demo yesterday. I took the Yamaha, as the 1000S is with the dealer waiting for a 17-tooth sprocket to come from Germany, and a full service. Besides, I would not take the MZ to Central London unless really forced to, the bike is really not suitable to be ridden in heavy traffic.
Anyway, I parked in Trafalgar Square very close to a Mastiff (or was it a Baghira ?), and then saw a two stroke, probably a 250, very old and proud, in light blue, parked in one of the side street of Whitehall. Turn out was good, although the organisers' claim of 3000 bikes seems a bit too much to me.
I think the ride to Victoria passed without any incidents, plenty of tourists and passers-by shouting their encouragement, and taking millions of pictures. A worthy way to spend a few hours in the afternoon.

Ride Safe,

The 31st March rally was certainly inspiring. As to exact numbers I don't think we will ever be sure but certainly well past the 1,000 we hoped for. For details of the rally, pictures and video and to see what the council did (a poor example of democracy) all can be found at http://www.notobikeparkingfees.com/.

The fight is not over, and hopefully for the next one I will have a set of wheels of my own. Any one with a Saxon 500 for sale preferably low mileage let me know.

Thanks

Nick
