2 MZ 660 Tourers for sale close by-like new!

Postby ultracyclist » Mon Mar 22, 2010 9:54 pm

Hi, I am new here.
I am Howard in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
I am considering a lighter bike for commuter and "errand" use. My usual steed is a 2001 BMW R1100R.

I am doing the usual due diligence before making an offer on a bike.

What can you tell me about a 2001 and 2002 MZ 660 tour that I should be aware of? Both bikes have about 2700 miles and they were part of dealer to dealer trade.

I have visited several on-line sites. This bike is the Dutch version of the Yamaha 660 single, I believe. Reviewers like the MZ because it feels a bit more solid.

Please enlighten me!

Great bikes, and usually priced right. Plenty of power for commuting as long as it is not much over 100 mph.
Excellent handling and reasonably comfortable. It will vibrate a bit more than your Bimmer...
Service parts are relatively easy to find. Try to get an owners manual, they're a bit scarce. Pdf's are around though.
Keep us posted on which one you get.

guitarzan-

What are the weak points of the bikes? All bikes have something...even the BMW oilheads have final drive issues.
Where are you located in the midwest?

Plastic oil tank just over the rear tire if I remember correctly ! Not really a weak point until or if it spits open.

From Anders post today "The OEM tail lights break due to vibration, you are much better off fitting something else, LED based for instance."
It's all here just browse through and you will find it all, don't be in a great hurry if the price is higher than you want as most people don't know what these machines even are and well chances are slim it will be sold from under you.Besides like you said he has two.Not much selling these days,as they say in real estate "It's a buyers market"

Strong reliable Yamaha 660 single. My baggy will just do 100 mph which seems a lot faster on it than a liter bike I own. Here's mine same motor all across the line.Just this one can go off-road :D Good luck you can't go wrong if the price is right and I'm guessing it must be.

Howard, the iceman is right on about the oil tank location for Skorpions, and especially the tail lights.
I have a Sport, and have had to glue the base back together a couple times. A LED replacement is on the to do list.
The Tour tail light is a different shape and maybe a bit better, but it will probably be an issue at some point.
The only issue I've had with the oil tank is weeping at trace of oil at the return hose fitting. It would eventually accumulate at the bottom of the tank and drip if not wiped it off. I swapped hose clamps and pretty much cured it. I always look underneath the seat at the oil tank before riding. There is a coolant and brake reservoir under there too, so it makes sense to peek at them since they're all in one spot. A pre-flight inspection.
The battery size is pretty small and weak. I shopped around until I found an AGM type from BatteryWeb. MotoBat MB9U.

The cooling fans on Skorpions can be buggy, but the bikes are fairly cool runners, and rarely come on. When they do, they whine and warble. No big deal.
It may not be an issue on the Tours you are looking at, but some Skorpions (including mine) have speedometers in MPH, and odometer / trip meter in KM.
I'm in Ohio, by the way. If I was a bit closer, I'd take a look at those Tours myself! Aside from minor plumbing and electrical stuff, the Skorp is a solid bike with a superb Yamaha thumper powerplant.
