No problem, sounds like you have the 'PVL' ignition unit coupled with the combined regulator/rectifier unit, earlier models had the reg/rec under the seat.
Sounds like you're on your way to having it sorted anyway
With reference to the above timing method, i just tried it and it didn't work. I was getting no voltage at the yellow/black wire and at first thought my unit was fried. I did, however get a good spark at the plug so timed it by looking for the spark.
