Mastiff screen anyone ???

Postby bisphaman » Mon Jul 21, 2008 9:24 am

Has anyone out there fitted a screen of any sort onto a Mastiff, and if so any guide to price, fittings etc.
Mine has Touratech bar risers and Renthal bars fitted , though I don't think this would make much difference.

I refitted my Mastiff with a 7' T120 Bonneville headlight. Didn't care for the yellow pisshole in the snow stock headlights. I have an Airblade flyscreen on order. Mounts off 7" brackets. Should be an easy install. I'll post up pix when I'm done.

Simon,

Are you looking for a windscreen for aesthetics or wind protection? If it's the latter, when I go on longer highway trips, I mount a National Cycle universal fairing to my Baghira. They call this model the "Deflector Screen" (http://www.nationalcycle.com/catalogue/DeflectorScreen.shtml). Very quick and easy to attach to the accessory bar, and even quicker if you leave the very inconspicuous mounts on the bar and just remove the fairing and supports. Offers pretty good wind protection for those 400 mile days on the road.

It also doesn't look half bad on the Baggy. A little "GS-ish" if you ask me:

I put that same screen on and it worked great for me. I ended up taking it off because the cheesy plastic brackets that came with it just could not take the pressure. I need some nice billet ones to make it work better. While it was holding it worked great though, just enough to make an eighty mile ride tolerable.

Thanks for that MSW, yes that's the kind of thing I'm looking for. More as a wind deflector than for weather protection. Just one question - what's the width of the cutaway section above the headlight? Obviously my Mastiff has 2 side by side which I just measured at 10 inches. Looks very similar to a Givi screen I've seen this side of the pond.

Bisphaman,
Here's shot of my Mastiff with the Bonneville headlamp, before the flyscreen (which hasn't come yet). Quite a different look.

It certainly does look very different, kind of 'modern retro'.And no doubt it's a lot more effective than the 2 x 35 Watt candlepower standard set-up. Believe it or not, the best headlight I ever had on a motorcycle was my '92 MZ ETZ 301 Tour.
Look forward to seeing the photos with the screen. Will post some shots of mine on here soon.
(As in soon as my teenage son or daughter shows me how to do it.......!)

You don't need your kids to do this. I assume you have access to Photobucket in the UK. If so, just upload your pix to their site (you have to join, free!) and then cut and paste the "img" link Photobucket gives you for your picture into your post here on the forum. You need a host to post, so to speak. Paul

Here's the first shots of the flyscreen on my Mastiff. This was an initial rough fitting. Since it is a "universal" screen, I'll have to tweak it a some before I'm satisfied. I rode it and it does cut down helmet buffeting a bit. I still get good airflow at the shoulders. So far, so good.

bisphaman,

Sorry to take so long to respond, but the opening on the National Cycle Deflector Screen in the first pic above is about 5-3/4" at its narrowest point at the top, 9" at its widest point at the bottom, and the cutout is about 3" deep. Hope that helps.

MuzTruckstuff, I like that screen on your Mastiff.

MSW,
My screen is definitely not a tour screen, it's just intended to cut down on helmet buffeting. I'm interested in riding longer distances. Do you have any detail pics on how you mounted your screen? I like yours a lot and would consider getting one if I knew how to mount it ahead of time.
Thanks!

Heck, installation was the easiest part. Usually, when you buy a "universal" accessory for your motorcycle (and for us Baggy/Mastiff owners, universal accessories are about the only ones that we can get for our bikes), installation is a nightmare. Not so with this windscreen. It's like the fine engineers at MZ put those accessory bars on the Baggy just so this fairing would fit.

It installs in two easy steps. Step One: Install the c-clamps on the accessory bar on either side of the speedo.

Image

Step Two: Slide the fairing supports into the clamps and tighten:

Image

The clamps can be rotated, the supports can slide in and out, and the screen can tilt using the tightening knobs which make the fairing infinitely adjustable. I had mine at about a 45 degree angle with the rubber trim meeting the Baggy's fairing about midway. It made for great wind protection.

Tip (for someone who owns a Baggy, not for MuzTruckstuff): Don't have that rubber trim piece RESTING on the Baggy fairing, as it will wear a little line in your paint in no time. Have I mentioned that I'm a retard? :smt021

Anyway, this windscreen is about the best $75 I've spent on an accessory for my bike. The plexiglass is nice and thick, the supports are beefy (once tightened, the fairing doesn't move at all when at speed), and the adjusting knobs are good quality. The only cheap thing about it is that the footings for the supports don't go through the plexiglass. They're glued onto the inside. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, but then they put stickers on the outside of the plexiglass to make it look like the supports mount through the glass. And, of course, those stickers peeled off within 1,000 miles. Annoying, but definitely not a deal killer.

I don't have the windscreen on all the time, just when I'm going to do many miles on the freeway. But it's so easy to install, it goes on in about 5 minutes. 10 if I want to play with the position of the screen. Since the c-clamps are hidden behind the stock fairing, I just leave them on all the time.

All in all, I give it a thumbs up! :smt023
