More Electrics - Skorpion Traveller

Postby Anna » Wed Oct 22, 2008 1:36 pm

Hey guys,

It's me again - I only drop in when I want something!

Got some niggles with the electrics on the Traveller and I wondered if anyone had any sage advice...

1) Indicators. At motorway speeds (70mph ish), the front right-hand indicator sometimes flashes at double-speed. I assume when this happens the rear is doing nothing, but it's not easy to check at that speed... When I slow down all returns to normal. I've faffed around with the connections at the indicator unit end and there's nothing apparently wrong there.

2) Ignition. Sometimes (rarely now it's been looked at) turning the ignition key off doesn't stop the engine. Switching the kill switch off sometimes stops it and sometimes doesn't. Sometimes, you can turn it off at the ignition and kill switch, put the side stand down and put it into gear and it still won't stop - at which point you have to stall it... Not ideal!

Now, I think these are both related faults possibly to do with vibration at motorway speeds. There's a chunky group of wires that go into the clocks (dashboard?) in front of the headstock and the current theory is that this sometimes gets itself caught up and starts pulling connectors apart within the dashboard assemby. I've alleviated the pull on this by cable-tying the group of wires up so there is always some slack at the dashboard end. The faults happen less often now, but still do their thing occasionally.

I had a friend who's a reasonable mechanic and pretty decent auto electrician have a look at it a while back, and he managed to improve the situation a lot, but he hasn't completely cured it.

Any suggestions?

there is a relay in these bikes relay 19 it is the one that turn the power on and off with the
key
search "relay 19"
sounds like it sticking in the on position AND NEEDS REPLACED

and look for loose or bad connection in the wire going to rear turn lamp or bad bulb or socket
bulb loose in socket ...

the blinker relay could be bad. That is what usually happens when it changes frequency like that and the bulbs are OK.
I had the same thing with my Yamaha SZR and just change the relay and it is fine again.
With the various Skorpions in my garage I always had that problem and frequently.
