FCR Carb

Postby Atomic Punk » Wed Dec 10, 2008 6:37 am

Anyone know what model FCR carb will fit the Baggy? I'm after a 39mm and is it a dual one like the original carb?

EDIT: Dohhh! After writing this post, I noticed that you're in London, so you can ignore everything below that refers to U.S. dollars, supply problems when it comes to finding the right carb in the U.S., and U.S. suppliers. You shouldn't have any problem finding a source for the correct FCR (although it may be listed for the XT600). Everything else should apply, though!

After reading what feels like thousands of pages on the subject, here's what I've learned about fitting the FCR carbs (although I haven't yet scraped together the cash to buy one for myself, so take this for what it's worth):

1. Owners who have fitted FCRs to a Baggy or Mastiff have gone with anything from 33mm to 39mm, so I it appears that you can make anything in that range fit.

2. According to the main U.S. Supplier of Keihins (Sudco), there's no FCR application for the Yamaha XT600 (and you KNOW there's none for the Baggy). But that's probably just because they don't sell many of them, not because they wouldn't work. However, there is a CR application for the XT600 from Sudco, and it is a 33mm. So, I think a 33mm FCR would essentially be a stock replacement (aside from the better performance of the FCR).

3. According to our resident 660 mod specialist (well, one of them anyway), Bill, if you're going to go all the way up to 39, you had better have a super free intake, ported and polished head, and very open exhaust. With the stock airbox and stock headers or anything close, you really should be going with a 37mm or 35mm.

4. Most of the success stories I've read/seen from those on our level (weekend warriors), seem to indicate that 35mm is the sweet spot. At least it seems to be for me (I have the tunebike exhaust and a Holeshot can and no port/polish).

5. Although there's still a bit of controversy out there, the carbs made to fit the Raptor do appear to fit the Baggy, provided that you get new hoses to connect to the stock airbox or go with K&N pods (I think I would go with the latter). You also will need a new throttle cable.

6. The others who have bought FCRs new or got them from another bike have gotten them for/from the SRX600.

Now, here's the thing I can't figure out about 5 and 6 above: Sudco sells a 35mm for both the Raptor and the SRX600 (they don't list one for the XT600, just the CR carb). However, they list different part numbers for them (Raptor: 016-850, SRX: 016-700). Now maybe those are really the exact same carb, but if there's a difference, it would be good to know, so I could get the one that fits/works better. My guess is that they might be exactly the same internally, but the Raptor is a kit (w/cables, etc.) and the SRX is just the carb. Who knows, though.

Another note on getting the FCR for either the Raptor or SRX: Sudco only sells them in 35mm or 39mm. No 33 or 37.

If you haven't purchased yet, there are a couple of places in the U.S. that sell them. A few folks have gotten them from bikeworx in MA (http://www.bikeworx.com/), and have reported great service and Baggy-specific info. I tried to contact them by e-mail, but didn't get a response. I think you have to call them to get on their radar.

There's also this guy who sells them on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KEIHIN-FCR-35-dual-for-yamaha-xt-tt-ttr-srx-600_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em20Q2el1116QQitemZ150309666030QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories. He's actually in Greece but ships to America. He's asking $670 + 19% tax (Yikes!) + $29 shipping. My back of the envelope calculation puts these at about US$826. Seems steep, but he does appear (from the feedback on ebay) to be an honest guy who also provides some expertise with your purchase.

That guy just orders them from Sudco Europe. I'm guessing that the Bikeworx folks order from Sudco U.S. but know exactly which one to order and what parts to include in order to fit the Baggy.

Phew! You now know all I know about FCR carbs for the Baggy.

MSW,

concerning the different part numbers:

Blue Part Numbers with asterisk* = Push/Pull cables included
Blue Part Numbers = Carb Only
Red Part Numbers with asterisk* = Carb Kit complete with adapters
and Motion Pro Push/Pull Cable Set if required
Red Part Numbers = Carb Kit with adapters

The nr. for the SRX is in blue, the one for the Raptor is in red with an asterisk. So the one for the Raptor is a complete kit with all necessary adapters en cables. The one for the srx is carbs only.

Roel

Ah, yes. I did note the different COLORED numbers , but couldn't really see why two different sets of carbs that are essentially designed for the exact same engine might have different part numbers altogether. My only guess is that maybe the raptor is a single cable and not a push/pull? Ergo slightly different configuration?

Heck, I don't know. But we MZ owners are used to having to mod everything before it goes on our bikes, so either will probably work.

you living in London, the obvious thing to do is to drive down to Seven Oaks to Slipstream and get the lowdown from the horse's mouth.

I called Slipstream and they get theirs from the States they recommended dual 35mm with 37mm at about £700 I was just wondering if you could get them cheaper.
I may have lost my way but I'm way ahead of schedule
