Baggy Speedo Drive

Part of the dual sport conversion on my Baggy is a different speedo drive for the 21" front wheel. It looks just like the SM drive, but looking at it was as far as I got. I know this is going to sound stupid, but how in the hell do you separate the speedo cable from the drive? Here's a crappy pic from the parts fiche:

There's the ferrule or whatever you call it on the cable itself that unscrews, but when I separate that, the cable does not pull out of the drive. There's also a small pin on the drive that goes through the shaft where the cable comes in. I pressed that out as well, but still the cable doesn't come out.

Do you remove the drive gear from the side of the drive in order to unfasten the cable? Anyone done this before and want to give me a clue before I end up breaking something?

mine is the same, it seems as though it is seized on.

i not bothered though, as i use sat nav and a cycle speedo, as the stock speedo is crap (inaccurate)

Glad to know I'm not the only one. :smt017

I definitely use my GPS as the "real" speedo as well, but I REALLY need the odometer to work (esp. when doing my on-road mileage calculations, and trying to decide whether I should pray I make it to the next gas station or turn around and go back to the last one).

It might be time to do a little "open-speedo-drive surgery."

yep siezed is the word your looking for,inner cable would normaly pull out but because it's a once in a blue moon job they can be stuck firm and as the top end usualy has a stop fixed to inner cable,you can't pull the outer off the inner,wd40 or parrafin bath may help.

Hmm... So it should slide out when the outer ferule is unscrewed, or should that pin be pulled as well? I've unfastened both and still mine is stuck, so I'll have to try something chemical as you suggest. I'm just wondering where it might be getting hung up.

yep,thats the norm.fitted a trailtech to mine right after buying it new so came apart easily and the pin probably holds the worm gear in place,could try a bit of heat on the thing and easier on the bench in my experience,goodluck :lol:

nah, seriously, I could have bought one with all the money i have spent on other modes to my bike. Hope santa will bring me my trailtech...............

mudguard lower trial fitted tonight, looking good......

xtx660x rear painted and awaiting lacquer

with the xtx660x upper, the headlight cowl fits a lot lower looks better i must admit...........

Mike,

If you can pop the front wheel spindle out, you'll find the speedo drive easily detachable. If you take the drive unit complete and dunk it in a jamjar of diesel for a day or so hanging on its cable, I think you'll find that seized cable will slide out as neatly as a neat thing.

This trick has worked for me so many times I've lost count. I discovered it while talking to an old guy in Lincolnshire, whose hobby was digging up crashed WW2 planes and restoring them (or their bits). Everything mechanical they got, they dumped in oil drums full of diesel and left it for a few weeks. After the soaking, apparently whole engines came apart with relative ease, even after 50 years in the ground.

Worth a try .............. ?

That's just crazy enough to work! Heck, at this point, I'll give anything a shot. Now I just have to get me some diesel fuel. Thanks!
