I'd run some Chevron Techron or similar through a few tanks first if you think you are gummed up a little. Guess it depends on whether the bike runs at all, or just poorly maybe? Secondly you could spray some carb cleaner into the snorkels too, let it soak. If you really need to take the carbs off to clean them because you think the jets are clogged or gummed up, then just make sure you soak them in good strong cleaner for a while, spray out the bodies (or even dunk/soak them). You'll need to push the snorkels into the airbox to get enough clearance to slide the carbs out. If you take them off, it will at least give you a chance to check the needle heights and second carb activation height/setting, etc..
