Ed simplified the wiring harness.

GSX-R steering damper.jpg


Steering damper from a GSX-R attached to front of bike. Makes routing cables a lot simpler. And you can pick these things up for $20 all day long on eBay. (Turns out that the race org we're going to next week requires a damper, so ...) Also, the Woodcraft clip-ons that we didn't think would fit actually do fit.

Rearsets are Woodcraft-CFM units for SV650. Bolted them into the lower MZ mount, then drilled and tapped a hole to match the upper hole on the bracket. If this position works out next weekend at the track, we'll remove the original upper mounting tab/spacer thing and relocate it.

I love the relocated brake caliper. I'm not sure it will work as a rear brake, but who the hell needs one? Can't wait to clean up and repaint the swingarm and frame.

rear brake works well to bring the front end down when it's
toooo far off the ground :smt040

that pile of wire in the first picture scares me

I look at what you've assembled and I'm impressed to say the least.

I feel the same respect, seeing you and your mc as I do Bill Jurgensons's mcs (His web site is off the charts good)

Well, let's see how it runs next weekend! I've got it back in my garage now, and a whole bunch of little things have been cleaned up. I am deeply disappointed that the Michelob catch bottle is gone ... :(

The riding position is far better - the bars are lower, the pegs much more comfortable. The tail section is mounted in a much more stable manner. Lots of little stuff has been improved. The old throttle housing was trashed, so we adapted one from a Suzuki GS500 (I couldn't source an SV one in time). Because we used Woodcraft-CFM 2nd gen SV rearsets, the rear brake master cylinder from a GS500 bolted right on. I practiced taking the rear wheel on and off with the brake caliper under the axle, and it was simple as hell.

I'm not really going to worry much about lap times this weekend, just trying to make sure all the systems are good and the suspension and geometry are in the ballpark.

p.s. If it helps any, the rear wheel swap wasn't TOO difficult, I'm told. The face of the sprocket carrier where the sprocket seats had about 15mm taken off to get the sprocket to line up with the countershaft sprocket. The bearing in the sprocket carrier was moved inward an equal amount. We made spacer/sleeves to take up the slack between the SV bearings and the MZ axle, and to position the wheel on the centerline of the bike. Ed threaded the sprocket bolt holes and used hollow Yamaha bolts to hold the sprocket in place. All that was left was that rear caliper carrier. Ed cut up and welded the stock one, but I also liked Texoot's 10mm plate.

The wheel is light, modern in width, and looks nice. There's plenty of clearance for everything.

Thanks. I'll probably keep it this way for half the season, then I'll try to get a TZ or RS fairing onto it before the trip to Miller. And Ed gave me a mountain of s**t for the tinted windscreen. It was the only thing I could find in stock!

The bad news is that I crashed during Sunday morning warmup; cold tires, cold track, a bit of mist. No serious damage done.

The good news is that everything worked. The wheels, the forks, the new levers, switches, throttle, etc.

The bonus is that during the race I ran on Saturday afternoon to shake the bike down and get some practice at the Las Vegas track (it was at least three years since I've been there), I beat another guy on a Yamaha SRX-6. That means my first win in 2012, 11 years straight that I've won at least one trophy, and seven years straight that I've won a race. Here's to being 49 and being too dumb to quit!
