MZ/MuZ Riders

Slowly but surely still working my way through the bike looking for the cause of the starting problems!

Found the earth connection to the engine to be suspect (1 in first photo) - as soon as I started to back off the retaining bolt, barely a 1/4 turn, the bike alarm started bleeping as the connection made and broke.
Cleaned the connection up and added in an additional earth cable (2 in first photo) that I'll attach to a suitable point on the frame.

Also found a bodged connection - wires snipped and joined (second photo), just twisted together and wrapped with insulation tape!
Anyone tell me what these wires would have attached to originally?! I'll either reinstate or solder and heatshring the joint.

Ah ha........brain in gear! does the Mastiff usually have a side stand switch? Mine doesn't, so that explains the cut wiring?

Any electricians round here - second opinion on extra earth lead would be apprciated......Thanks

There is a side stand switch, when its open circuit you loose the ignition completly. Try making the connection for the two wires more electrically sound. The wiring diagramme shows these wires to be brown and brown/white as per your picture.
Additional earth wires are alsways a good idea. Try connecting aditional wires to a point on the chasis and to another engine point.
If the spark appears weak, double check all connections for the ignition circuit. Also check the battery is souind. A good way to check this may be to connect another battery instead of yours. Try making temporary connections to a car battery and check again. Dont have the battery still attached to the cars wiring though as this can cause problems. Sometimes a battery appears good, but is going faulty.

over the years i have found several bikes with problems
that went away when you hooked a ground wire to the handle bars
and ran it to the minus of battery and engine block

the bearings in the fork neck triple tree area were not a good grounding path

wife has a 1980 yamaha sr 250 exciter that will not run starter with out this extra wire and the horn will not beep!
