Hi and THANK YOU
You guys where spot on with your diagnosis, seems it was the cold running jet (choke) mechanisim sticking.
I changed the oil as there seemed to be fuel mixed in . Cleaned the choke going into the carb as suggested. And so far so good .
You guys saved me some money .Thanks for being so generous with your experience and knowledge.
I do have one more hopefully not too stupid a question. At the top of the rubber overflow pipe at the bottom of the carb is a screw (wich i somehow have successfully managed to strip ) in the closed position ,will the overflow still work? Is the screw usually left completly closed unless draining the carb ,i would venture to say yes.
Thanks again
steve

Yeah Stevo that's the carb drain screw, and it's normallly closed. since it's stripped it may end up working itself loose. Perhaps you could put a dollop of fuel resistant silicone or similar to keep the screw from backing out. In the mean time, maybe somebody (like Wonky or Bill J.) has an old stock carb they could take a float bowl off of for you?

I have ruined the head two carb drain screws, before I realized: You can't use bits, normal shorter bits, to work the screw.
There is not enough room on the side for the very holder of the bit. And that places the bit slightly of centre, which makes it slip. And grind down the head of the screw.

DOH! My mistake, I thought you meant you stripped the threads, not the head! Disregard previous solution then.. :?
