Baggy Airbox Mod?

Postby AtomicSpew » Sun Jan 27, 2008 7:02 pm

I've searched the posts and, though I've seen a couple references to airbox mods, they don't apply to the Baggy, or only in relation to a carb change with the Baggy.

I have a 2003 Baggy with an M4 can (the bike is otherwise stock) and my question is this: Is there a basic airbox mod (drilling holes, etc.) that is recommended for the Baggy? I have my bike torn-down pretty well right now and figured now would be the best time to do anything to the bike in terms of alterations. What about simply changing filters from the TwinAir to something else?

Thoughts?

The problem you have is that your running a foam air filter and allowing all the dust and air to be drawn directly through another hole in your airbox will inevitably require more servicing as the foam air filter will perish and dry up quicker. If you have just an end can and modified jet set-up messing about with the airbox won't make that much of a difference to be honest. The best thing to do is change the carbs and airbox for a better set-up and a noticeable difference in power delivery. Just putting a can and a jet kit onto a standard link-pipe and carb set-up will allow the bike to run better but for optimum performance mod don't waste time and effort cutting your airbox up, remove and add K&N filters or something of same design! This will require some forward thinking and some home DIY!

If the bike sounds like it's bogging down under throttle then drill a couple of small holes either side of the airbox about 10mm diameter,i can't see that you will need to do this with the small mods you have already made though. But remember you will need to clean the filter on a more regular basis...

Hope this helps!

1 mod I have sen mentioned is to remove the trim on the top of the air filter box. Not sure, but I think this is there to provide a seal to teh underside of teh saddle.
Could be a wast of time though.

Sounds like I should just leave the airbox as-is. I know on some bikes there are decent benefits with opening up airboxes, but I wasn't sure about the Baggy.

I don't know if I want to spend the money on a flatside carb. I think I'd be more inclined to spend that much money on Tunebike's Power Header and Carb Kit combo, along with the CDI conversion and the Flywheel mods they do. All of that's about the same $$ as a flatside conversion, and probably (collectively) offer better throttle response and higher revs, which is more what I'm going after.

For now I'm just happy to get it back running and can't wait for a fairly dry day to hit my favorite twisties!

Cheers-
Flip

Trouble is when you modfiy the head and the CDI you will then need to adjust carbs and pipes to accomodate the harder revving motor otherwise it will struggle to breathe. You will need a bigger carb/jet set-up in the end anyway. Gas-flow:Cam:CDI mod will also require splitting crank cases and having Carrillo or Falicon rod fitted or your gonna be swearing slightly for a while.

Bottom line as i say to everyone:

"If your gonna do it, do it properly or don't do it at all. There is NO way of tuning a bike on the cheap, it simply doesn't happen and it'll cost you bucks in the long run. Save your pennies and have your motor completely done top to bottom. There are plenty of competent tuners around today that can help. Don't cut corners or you'll pay in the future!"

Hey m4panther,
Those are really interesting.
I've got an extra box that's slightly melted and have been wondering what I could do to change the size for clearance and do something to add flow!
Atomic Spew,
Hope all is going good up on the mountain!
Mine is in pieces at the moment, but not for long! Iv'e got some welding to do to an extra sub frame.
I agree with Mark. I saw your Baghira in SV and thought that I'd get myself in gear, doing the pipe and jet kit. As you've read here I'm putting stock carbs back on so I can enjoy this season.
I'll be putting the coins together later and build a mild version of Marks engine, with quality and reliability in mind.
Hope to see ya in the twisties later,
Robert

Has anyone installed those "Uni Air Filter AirVent" things yet? If so, did you have to rejet? I have a packet of 6 of them and I'd like to install them, but I'd like to know if I'll need to rejet. If you did rejet, what size did you use?

Robert!
Hey man--I remember you...funny, my bike is in pieces, too. I was on a trail/fire road ride with a bunch of other SuperMoto types and I totally blew a right hander, and wound up smacking a tree head-on going a pretty good clip. Luckily, I first hit a drainage ditch, completely compressing the front before my front fender, headlight assembly, my chest and face (helmet's face) hit the tree. I busted up all the plastics on the front of the bike, including snapping the headlight bracket, but no damage to the forks or rim, so I feel lucky. I have replacement parts, but have since added a little boy to our family (Dec 20th), so I've been playing with the baby and the bike's been sitting waiting for completion. I have a bit more to do, but it's basically back together--I picked up some used plastics, and also bought an Acerbis front fender and headlight assembly. The fender was an ebay find, and is silver. You'll recall my bike is (was) red, so I'm kind of going for the Husky colors now. My front fender is silver, the headlight and forward quarter panels are black, the rear quarters are red, and the rear fender I painted silver to match the front. It looks pretty good, actually, but I think I need to add a bunch of stickers to it now! I'm actually just hoping I can get it running. The little nipple on the choke lever that holds the dial in place on the handlebars also sheered off on impact in that crash, and now the dial wants to just spin around if I'm not careful when using the choke. The last time I had it started I don't think I got the choke all the way back to "off", and the bike was sputtering and acting flooded (and starved). So, I cleaned and oiled the air filter (holy crap did it need it!) changed the fouled spark plug, shot some lube into the choke assembly on the carb, and I've got it on the trickle charger tonight. Hopefully I'll get a good crank out of it in the morning and will have it running again! Come to think of it, I should dump the old gas out of the tank and give it some fresh juice...

So, my highway days on it are over for the most part, and I'm thinking about gearing it down to a 14 tooth while I have it somewhat torn down. I think it'll be kick up here in the mountains to have that gearing. Anyway, sorry for the thread hijack. Look me up when you're back on the road and lets go for a spin through Bonny Doon!
Take care-

OK you two. We need to get together for a Santa Cruz Mountain Baggy ride this summer (I'm up in San Mateo). I'm ready to go whenever you both have your bikes back on the road at the same time. It would be nice to fix my rich-running problem (that's for another thread), but I'm still riding whilst fiddling.

OK, end of hijack.

The previous owner of my bike put in 6 of the little foam vents. I have no idea weather the bike was rejetted or not. Since I haven’t ridden a stock bike, I can’t really make a comment, other than they look cool.

I have them installed. No rejetting required. The only time I Had my carbs rejetted is when I had the M4 can installed, there Had been a lot of loud pops and backfires before new jets.

The unifilters were installed two years later and the carbs didn't require any adjustment

Hey M4-
Do you remember what jetting you went to? I bought my Baggy with the M4 can on, and the previous owner told me it had been re-jetted, but I get a LOT of pops and backfire, especially on decelleration, so I suspect that perhaps it wasn't re-jetted. I've sealed up all places where I think I could be leaking air and I'm still getting the popping (sounds kinda cool, but I suspect I'm losing performance...)

Yeah It's cool, but your neighbors friggin hate you! and they know who you are when you drive through thier neighborhood in the early morning or late at night. They are plotting as we speak... I had a guy gesture he was going to throw something at me once. people seam to get crazy if you blast through thier quite streets at 3 in the morning :smt006
