Speedo not working and some other things...

Postby Epirb » Sun Apr 13, 2008 4:38 pm

Evening all, became the owner of a 2002 grey import Baghira a couple of months ago, swapped out standard exhaust for an unlabled carbon one that came with the bike and here I am, as happy as Larry with 18000 clicks on the clock.

However, hopped on for a quick ride today and speedo and odometer dead as a dodo. Broke connection down at fork leg, 'stainless' fastener came off easily but 'brass' retainer seemed very reluctant to move. Reattached and broke top connection this came out clean and no probs so dropped a load of WD 40 down the cable sleeve. Left for four hours, reconnected and rode again, still no speedo. Notice that cable seems short, when I put bars over at full lock it is actually deflecting the speedo unit!

So, any details about how to dissasemble bottom connection and ideas why it is coming up tight on full lock much appreciated.

Thanks, and hello! Epirb.

PS looking for a small screen or mod to screen to get me up to cruising speeds on the motorway. Not comfy at the mo.

PPS, havent seen a Baggy with a rear hugger yet, any ideas?

PPPS, Smallish, stylish, cheapish mirrors for a straight swap????

PPPPS, My bike is in silver but quite a lot of the paint seems to be falling off, is this normal?

Thanks!! :-)

if paint is bad make it a black one with a can of spray on truck bed liner plastic works good last along time
and armorall makes it look good just dont use it on the seat

Routing looks good enough, follows clips on frame and plastics, also guess it has been replaced with a non stock item and that therefore it had problems of some sort, are they prone?.....still can't see how to go about getting it apart tho'

I remember seeing a guy on Horizons Unlimited with a baggy and he had some sort of windscreen on his bike. Livotlout at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/o ... hira-24213 is the guy.

It sounds to me like you have the wrong speedo cable on your bike. Do you have a full height model? Perhaps it's using a reduced height cable. That's the best I can figure, though.

I remember seeing some guy on the http://www.supermotojunkie.com forum with some carbon pattern mirrors. I don't know the name, but if you find someone with a picture of something you like, I'm sure they'll be glad to point you in the right direction.

Baggies don't have great paint, as far as I can tell. I'm always strapping a tent, sleeping bag, saddlebags and a tankbag onto my bike. There are loads of places where the bungies and straps have worn the paint away, but, as I recall, that didn't take too long. So yeah, I'd say paint falling off is normal.

I have a National Cycle universal fairing on my Baggy. I think they call it a "Deflector Screen" now. It looks like this (only it doesn't look quite so wide on the Baggy):

Unfortunately, I only have one pic of the screen on my bike, and it's a crappy one. You get the idea, though:

It was very easy to install on those "accessory bars" or whatever they are that go from the front side covers, around the turn signals, and meet under the speedo. Hard to tell from this pic, but it gives the bike a nice "GS-like" look.

As for effectiveness, it was pretty good. I think this is the smallest screen you can get that still gives you good freeway wind protection. It'll lessen your gas mileage a bit, though, given the extra wind the bike has to push. Not bad for about 75 bucks.
