Skorpion Sport

Postby iktank » Sat Mar 07, 2009 12:11 pm

I have a Skorpion Sport that has only done 276miles yes 276 miles been garaged for 12 years and never used.
Thought bout time i used it. Changed the oil, filter, cleaned the strainer, new fuel, cleaned filters , drained carb flushed it thro, new iridium plug, air filter, put some oil in the piston etc etc.
Pumped the petrol thro - and it started no problem
I have been checking on line and there seems to be severe lack of parts
Engine yamaha no prob,
frame - severe prob so must not drop - note to self!!
Air filters - severe problem - any advice on where to obtain air filters they seem to be running out
Indicators and mirrors I note are same as triumph
Sad huh not using bike for so long - enjoy my triumphs sorry

Hi there!

I'm a Brit bike fan too - but the Skorpion's got right under my skin. On the overrun they sound like Thruxton Race Circuit used to ....ooooh, about 40 years ago!

Spares: Have a browse around here ... I won't reinvent the wheel, but nearly everything's available, replicatable or adaptable from other bikes. There's even a list of interchangeable parts. Magic!! These people have got spares acquisition down to an art form and theylre bright cookies.

Mostly.

One final thing - there's a geezer called Bill Jurgenson who lives in Germany. Despite his name he's American (It fooled me) and he races these bikes. If you have a problem, this guy just 'knows' it - straight out of his head!!!

Welcome to our little club. It's a great place with some great people and some amazing bikes.

Do check the breather and oil tank vent hoses, these tend to crack and open up the risk of oil on the back tire.
My Skorpion sat idle for 7 years before I acquired it, and the biggest problem has been rubber items turning to dust.
Consider a fork oil change too.
Air cleaner seems to be a single source item manufactured in Germany only as far as I know.
There's a KAWASAKI air filter that's close, but does not really fit the stock air box.
I'd consider making adaptors if there's enough interest, I have access to CNC machining....
Good luck,
Jim

Hi - thanks for replies, Did have oil on my rear tyre on starting bike, rubber had perished at the union, rubber boot that covers the rear brake switch has fallen to bite - anyone know where i can geta replacement boot cant find anything suitable on the internet, all other parts were generally heavily coated in wd40 and looks like it saved them.
Air filter as you state only real service item problem have just about sourced all other items. glad to know someone has put a list together.
next time i change the oil i now know not to undo the filter bleed screw to far such that it falls out and squerts oil all over the place (including all over me - japs had a laugh when they designed this me thinks)
second ride out one of the fairing bolts decided to fall off lost the dome nut and m6-18mm od washer, gona change them all to ss washes and lock nuts!!!!
Well, all taxed, insured and almost run in, not used to such a quiet can - do miss the sound of ma triple

HI,

I am the "geezer" named Bill, tho I didn't know tha being 65 qualified one for Geezerdom. when I was kid you had to be a ot older.

Paul van der Wouwer over at the Belgian/Dutch MonoForum posted a sort dity on how to make a new K&Nfor the Skorpion from a Standard K&N car filter.
http://forum.monoconnection.nl/viewtopic.php?t=908&highlight=luchtfilter
Like here, you need to be registered to actually do anything there. It is worth it tho, since it is certianly the best of the various fora covering our topic but also the all other Yamaha and Honda singles. If you ask in English, you get an answer in English, tho that is true of all of both German fora as well, both of which also require registration:
Skorpion Forum
SZR Forum
Several of the SZR owners, me too, also have a Skorpion and it is the same engine in a similar bike.

You need a K&N filter for a HONDA civic crx, 85'-87' nr;33-2021.

you will get two inserts from this.

Trim a piece of the Honda filter to fit and "glue" it into to the cleaned frame with a good petrol resistance silicon adhesive.

Most of the removavble parts of the Skorpion are italian in original and can be found on any on a number of Yamahas as well as Ducatis or the Cagiva Mito.
The boot over the rear brake switch is a standard dime a dozen item, not a priority part. Ask just about any bike dealer, tho a Yamaha dealer is best.
The switch is used on hundreds of bikes and still more cars. I has the standard M10x1mm thread. The Grimeca brake pumps, especially the rear one, are finky. Don't bother with it when it gets troublesome which it will. Just replace it with a standard Brembo 11mm rear pump found on lot an lots of bikes. Ducatis for instance. Brake pads are the same as any Ducati monster or 750/900SS. Lots of others as well. EBC is the sole source for a new front rotor.
Unlike the substandard calipers and pumps, the steel braided pipes are top quality, you will never have to change those, ever.
Get your rubber hoses and tubes from an industrial jobber. Don't bother with bike suppliers, altho Gericke and presumably Louis do have servicable 6mm and 8mm black rubber petrol hose which will also do as a lead to the brake pump from the reservoir. I have a piece of best quality 1" garden hose in my cooling system. Red at that and everyone thinks it is sexy racing silicon hose.
The original Lenhart & Wagner stainless exhaust is heavy 'cause it is virtually indestructable. Technically, it it top quality as well. there is no reason to change it (except weight). None of the vialble alternatives are as good and a few actually deliver considerably less umph. Loud is not necessarily better in this case until you get into real racing systems, not just bolt-on look alikes. If you want to sacrifice a HP or two, tho there aren't that many to give up, you can go for something like the BSM which is specifically supplied for the Skorpion. Their street-legal can actually does loose out compared to the Lenhart & Wagner, but it is lighter and loud.

gona change them all to ss washes and lock nuts!!!!

And you figured that out all by yourself. I personally use screws like this:

Aluminum tho in my case usually black, Mine are from Poggipolini and can be had in various anodised colors.
For them Aluminum selflocking nuts:

with 18mm nylon wahsers:
http://www.qualityproducts.de/standard_schrauben/cat_390.pdf
I am sure there is an English jobber for these items, but if you want them and cannot find one, I am sure Thomas Ratsch, the German importer, will gladly supply you or you can ask me to send the ones you want. Not much postage involved: aluminum.

Diligently read thru the archives here as just about any topic imaginable has already been covered.

Brake Reservoir hose CAUTION

Postby jimc » Mon Mar 09, 2009 12:28 pm

A caution regarding low pressure brake fluid hoses (reservoir to pump)- Do not use gasoline type hose,
has been known to swell internally with expected result.
Better to use (cheap too) brake fluid compatible tubing such as BMW 21521163714 (automotive).

Best of luck,
Jim

Many thanks for your input, really has helped. Normally thrashed my bikes over the years all on scrap heap
I intend to look after this, Always wanted one and aquired this from a mate on the understanding i would not trash it. Sedate ride outs i promise - getting old now 43!!!!! and too many broken bones

Hopefully get to meet one of you gents one day on my more sedate jaunts (last one in france broke my leg)

Thanks again
Ian

Relax Bill. Over here in the UK, it's a term of affection.

(That's affection - NOT endearment ..... just wanted to get that straight, OK Boss?) 8)
