Need help identifying part on 2001 Baghira

Location: right side as seated, below headers, above and behind rear brake pedal and clutch cable attachment, just in front of swing arm pivot/frame.
Appearance: size/shape of a "D" battery, attached to bracket by a thick zip tie, electrical wires connected to side; hose from left side carb (other hose T'd from another hose that disappears between both carbs)going into mystery part, and finally a vent/drain hose exiting the rear/left side of said part to beneath bike.
Could someone please tell me what this is, what it does, and can I live without it. The hose leading into it melted against the exhaust pipes and split in two.
Thanks- Ed

Hi,

I would say it is probably a carb breather. I removed mine and replace3d it with a K and n type pleated filter....

Alun, Great pics and bike! They have inspired me with possibilities. In addition to this mystery part I do have a carb breather as well. I've looked at pics of other bikes on this forum and noticed that some bikes do and others don't have the part in question. I do appreciate your response and hope someone else here will also share their knowledge/opinion.
Thanks- Ed

I have never seen that before. What you can be sure of is that is not the EPA stuff.

Now I'm curious as to what it is.

where the wires terminate into the loom, does that look like a factory type connection or after market job,my guess as to the mystery object is maybe a vacumn and also electricaly controlled chain oiler  :?

rodge70,
Thanks for a great guess! However, I'm the original owner and have not done the modification (chain oiler) you mentioned. Looking through the member's photo gallery I noticed that kman.45 has it also, as well as a couple of other members who live outside of California; therefore discrediting my theory that it could have been part of the state's strict emissions regulations we have here.

David I think you're right! I looked at Grahams' website and looked through every diagram and came to the same conclusion. Now, does anyone know why this "Ventilation Valve" is used only on the "USA" bikes; what it's function is; do I need it, and if I don't, what to do with the wires.
Much Thanks- Ed
