Hello all,

I need to replace the chain and sprockets on my 2000 Black Panther. After snooping around these discussions, it looks like a 15/45 ratio with a 114 link, 520 chain would be the best choice. I too want a little more pep than the stock(15/43?) ratio offers and it sounds like 15/45 is a happy medium...I don't want to loose too much on top. Will a 114 link chain fit with this ratio? Also, I live in the US, where should I look to order these parts from?

I have looked at JTsprockets.com and found the 14/45 ratio but they recommend a 108 chain. That's not right, is it? It sounds like you all agree that the 114 will fit but I want to make sure. Lastly, do the sprockets need to be specific for my bike or are they more universal?

It depends on which Baggy you have. Is it height reduced, or standard height? If it's the standard height, the stock sprockets were indeed 15/43 with a 114 link chain. The HR model had the same sprockets with a 110 link chain.

If you have the standard height, and you just want to go up to a 45 tooth sprocket on the rear, it's a tight fit, but you can stick with a 114 link chain (not an issue, though, because as the chain wears, it will stretch, and you'll adjust it the other way). If you go beyond that (above 45), you should add a couple of links to the chain. There's nothing set in stone, but since the stock BP is 43/114, and the stock dual sport is 52/118 (both standard height), you can ballpark it. Maybe like this:

Sprocket Chain
43 114
45 114-115
47 116
52 118

If you're unsure about the right number of links, err on the longer side, because you can always cut links off (and remember to test the final fit before peening the master link). Also, make sure you always change the sprocket and chain together. I always thought that was just an overly cautious cliche, but then I used a moderately worn chain with a new sprocket. I've never seen a sprocket wear so quickly in my life.

I ended up ordering a 45 with a 114 link chain. The chain on the bike was a 114 as well but the new chain fit just fine with the two extra teeth. Also, I'm not positive but I don't think my panther has been height reduced.

Another question for anyone who has input. How much slack do you all leave on the chain? The manual says 30-40mm, I think, but it seems a bit loose. I know, because of the long suspension travel, that more slack is necessary but does it really need that much?

I always run my chain on the slacker end of the scale. Tight chains equal worn out chains. Remember that maximum tightness is achieved when the countershaft, swingarm pivot, and rear axle are in alignment. So as your bike sits there on the floor, the chain is not at it's tightest point, since the rear axle is "below" the swingarm pivot.

I was running a 43 rear sprocket, but have gone back up to a 45 as i have just come back from isle of man and wanted a better top end the 43 tooth rear was a good option though. only it gave me less top end but 50 -80 acceleration was blistering...
