CNC'd parts on Mastiff/ Baghira?

Postby Fil » Tue Aug 24, 2010 9:09 am

I've got a feeling I've asked this before, but my '98 Mastiff has a few CNC'd parts on it that are standard, like the fork clamps (triple trees), wheel spacers, front and rear brake caliper brackets. I kow they are standard because I've owned the bike from new.

I've noticed on most pictures I've seen on here that some or all of these parts on other Mastiffs/ Baghiras are cast items.

I guess they must have switched from CNC'd parts to cast ones to cut costs, but I wondered if anyone else with an early Baggy has factory CNC'd bits, and if anyone knows when they changed to cast items??

Hi mate, I'm new on here, and new to a Baghira - I pick it up next Saturday.

To answer your question, it seems that I've bought the Height Reduced version, which I read somewhere on this forum is identified as the HR model by having non adjustable forks, in cast clamps. I have no idea how true that is though. (Or if mine has cast clamps - I know it has no peload adjustment at the handlebar end of the forks though)

HTH. :?

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think it has anything to do with it being any particular model, full height or HR. My bike is a Mastiff, which uses the same suspension as the HR Baghira (non-adjustable forks), and it has CNC'd clamps, but I've seen pics of full height and HR Baggies that have cast clamps.

Bet you can't wait 'til next weekend ;-)

You're right there, it's my first week back at work after a fortnights holiday too, so it's going to be a looooong one!

From what I've picked up from browsing this site, and the internet, it looks like the Mz's are pretty similair to the CCM's, in that quite often the exact same models had different parts fitted, without explanation. Certainly CCM owners regularly report bikes bought from new, that differ in spec from what CCM say they built, such as CCM say all CCM404 DS are supplied with the 13l petrol tank, while the CCM404 E had the smaller 9l tank. Owners dispute this, and there are plenty of other examples.

My theory is that a small volume producer, such as CCM or MZ, that is sourcing parts from all over to put a bike together, is a bit at the mercy of suppliers, if there are ever any shortages, or deadlines that can't be met, would you let MZ down, or KTM?

So in order to get their bikes out on time still, the spare parts bin, or other model stock may have been raided, thus getting a bike out in time, but that has a slightly different spec. You don't let the customer down, but you don't half confuse the second, third or fourth owner!

An update:

Mines a 2001, and the clamps are cast. Very nice they are too, with the MZ logo on.
