MZ/MuZ Riders

Hi ALL,

I'm the proud new owner of a 2003 Baghira SM and I'm looking to get a set of enduor wheels for adventure riding and offroad use. Where might I get a set and what are my options.

flat track racers use 18 inch
a good set of 17in knobbies should make it go and a lot cheaper

Well, I just purchased some Avon Distanzias, but I'm not so certain they are up for the challenge of the very rocky and loose fire roads and trails here in Colorado when on this short and fat wheels. I've been riding my xt550 here for years with some 60/40 tires on 18 and 21' wheels and its all it can do to handle the rougher terrain. I'm sure the distanzias on the stock rims will be way more than adequate for most situations, and maybe i'll just have to avoid some of the more technical stuff and be very very happy with this bikes street performance and just use the xt for trips with lots of dirt and rock. but that would be kinda sad. thanks for the input though- i'm headed out now

Ty, do you have the height reduced version (you'll know if it is, if it does not have an adjustable fork)? I've thought about doing what you're doing with the Distanzias and taking mine on mild off road adventures. Let us know how it goes.

The price the dealer quoted fell through so I'm going to stick with the road tires for now. They seem to stick pretty well to gravel roads actually. When I do finally get some new tires I'll let you know how it goes. I'll definitely be testing the bike on some trails- rough ones probably.

I do have the travel reduced version, so chances are I'll never be putting any bigger wheels on this bike- its just not cost effective for what I'll gain. Especially considering the fact that I have an XT550 that's well set up for 50/50 off road, on road travel and have bags and racks ready. Maybe some day, but for now, I don't need anything more than a sump guard, some dual sport tires and maybe a set of panniers for 95% of what I'd like to use this bike for. The rest falls under the purview of the XT.

I think you're on the right track with the XT for your more serious off-road treks, but just in case you want a dual-sport set-up for the Baggy, there's a complete Enduro model for sale on ebay, but it's back East and would require shipping. I picked up a rolling chasis Enduro model a couple years back and use the wheel set from it on my Street Moto regularly. The Baggy is a bit heavy for the more technical off-roading, and with stock gearing it isn't the easiest thing to lift the front tire when needing to get over obstacles. To that end, I'm now in the market for a good trail/woods bike, as I'm tired of dumping (and picking up) the Baggy on the single tracks. However, I love having the option of a proper off-road set-up for my MZ and do enjoy it on the fire roads and less challenging off-road rides!

Touratek makes a sump guard for our bikes, and I have one fitted and can attest to their strength. I was hauling ass on an off-road ride a few years ago when I still had the Distanzia's mounted, and I came up on a fairly narrow creek crossing--something that with a little lofting of the front tire, I should have cleared no problem. Well, I came up short on trying to jump this little water crossing, with my front tire clearing but that was all. There was a big rock about the size of a basketball embedded into the far side of the bank of the creek--about 1/2 of it still sticking out. Because I still had the 17's on at this point (I hadn't bought the roller yet), the Baggy was lower and I smacked that rock with the Touratek guard, making a damn loud "CLAAANNGG" as the bike bounced off the stone. I managed to keep the bike up-right and pulled off to check the damage. There was a nice gouge right down the middle of the guard, but that was it! I had "a moment" of thanks, hopped back on and went on my merry way! Although they add some weight to our little piggy's, I do recommend them:
