1999 Baghira Speedo and tach

I have a 1999 baghira and the speedo is off. I've read that the baghira uses a 2.44:1 ratio speedo, and most use a 2:1 or 1:1. It seems that something was rigged on this bike because the speedo is off as if there was a 2:1 ratio in the works. I'm doing 42 by GPS when it says I'm doing 50, which is about the same ratio as if someone rigged a 2:1 part to work.

Any ideas where I should start looking? I'm unsure which part would have been replaced or hacked on (or if that is even the case) and where to find an original replacement. I would really like to get the stock speedo working correctly.

Anyone using an aftermarket tach? I've read that some people mount them to the cam cover?

HI , i have a speedo adapter on mine , it fits at the bottom of the speedo cable and converts KPH to MPH ,so if this is the case on yours then although you see a kph speed -- it really means MPH--just a thought !
tacho
i fitted a mechanical tacho on my baggie , the drive of an xt600 fit nicely on the engine( see my photo album) and used an aftermarket mechanical tacho with a 4/1 ratio,( flea bay £10 )It makes changing gear easy now ,

did bike come with two sets of wheels and if so maybe wrong drive fitted for wheel size? trailtech speedo works well and has rev counter, temp gauge etc and easy to fit.

No, it is only 20% off, not 3/8th off. IE, when it says I'm doing 80kmh (~50mph) I am really doing about 41-42. I would really like to get it working in it's OEM fashion, ie, the KM's are correct.

I only assumed that it has a 2:1 ratio something or other on it because it was mentioned and 50/42 ~= 2.44/2.0

It did not come with different tires/wheels. They look like the OEM wheels, which is what I was told they were. Could be wrong though.

Hoping there is a part that I have to change to get it right. Changing the ratio with with a +2 rear sprocket will give even more of change, throwing it further off. (although it would get me closer to the 2:1 KM ratio, ie, going 100km on the speedo would be closer to 50 actual mph, but has the disadvantage of artificially inflating the mileage on the bike.

Changing the rear sprocket will not effect the speedo, as its driven off the front wheel.

Different speedo drives for 17'' & 21'' wheels you may have bought a bike that has had its wheels changed.

Maybe so sir, but I think that 21" front would put it way over the mark.

The tacho drive came of an xt 600 , cost about £10 from ebay,(see gallery photos)The tacho clock was a universal mechanicle unit with a ration of 4/1 i think.this also was £10 from ebay. The cable was the hardest , i bought a universal cable repair kit from ebay that alowed you to fit the relavent end to the inner cable once the length was sorted , the outer sheath was a half and half xt 600 for the drive end fitting and anything with a standard screw top for the clock end .to make the right cable length i spliced the two halves together with a piece of metal tubing on the outside to keep the joint straight, then sealed it off with some shrink wrap..

cable inner::ebay name;;Speedo Cable repair kit - Top quality by Motion Pro
tacho gear;; ebay name;;YAMAHA XT600 REV COUNTER CLOCK DRIVE GEAR XT 600 TENERE 3AJ...looks rough and not worth the monay but you get the jist
outer cable for gear end ;;YAMAHA XT550 XT600 XT660 REV COUNTER TACHO CABLE .remember you only want half this cable because its not long enough,, you have to extend it by splicing a second outer cable,
