You don't state, but did you check the bulb? On the subject of brake switches, the front is also fitted to many of the twist and go scooters, and are a lot cheaper to buy than the bmw part. If the rear is a black plastic cylinder with two wires and a metal nut, then a Suzuki aftermarket one should fit. I suggest that you search on ebay for a switch and compare the pictures.

Having done a little more digging, the switch appears to be a hydraulic one, it looks the same as fitted to some BMWs pre 1980. However, can I suggest you remove it and take it to your local car accessories place as it looks very simular to one fitted to the Leyland Mini. Just be aware that the pitch of the tread may be different, so you do need to compare them before purchase.

Thanks for all the info i didnt realy want to take the old one of until i got a new one as i thought this could mean avoiding to have to bleed the brakes but i think i may of found one on ebay that looks similar, but i will go into grahams first to see how much the original ones are.

This is just an industry standard thing and can be found all over the automotive industry and is not a manufacture only part, I bought an aftermarket one from flea bay for my sons derbi senda, just a direct replacement .
i believe m10 is the diameter and 1.00 is the thread pitch , all you have to get right is the total length?as this may differ.

Interesting, I was checking to see why neither my front or rear brakes light up the brake light and then I find this thread at the top of the 660cc discussion.

In my case, I detached the wires front and rear and in each case touching the leads together lights up the rear bulb so unfortunately it's not the cheap

So, I figure both front and rear brake switches have gone bad. What are the odds? When i press down each lever, the switch does not seem to close, so I guess I need new switches front and rear.

What can cause these things to go? They look like sealed units to me, no place for dirt to enter.

Anyway, this discussion seems to suggest the rear one I can get at any automotive shop, but the front one is a BMW part (and there is no BMW dealer around here). Any other alternatives for the front, which looks to me, to be a kind of twist-screw type.

Tigerboy - where are you located? There are lots of places on the web where you can buy the switch. I got mine at Capital Cycle:

12 bucks, fast shipping in the US.

Both of mine have been out for a while. If I wiggle the front brake wire just right, it goes on.
Good luck, Ed

i think the rear goes out because there is too much pressure in the system
when you use it hard

i do use the front most but some time use the rear one very HARD

i changed mine from a pressure switch
to an old time one from the past ..
