MZ/MuZ Riders

Front pads came loose from the backer plate, both of em, lots of meat on it but loose from the backing plate. Has it happened to anyone else ?

not with Ferodo, Brembo, Lukas, EBC or Carbon Lorraine.

lost the rear pad material on my zzr1100 a few years ago,genuine kwak pads,brand new ebc discs and both about 4 weeks old,luckily kawasaki dealer replaced pads and supplied a new rear disc as a goodwill gesture.

Never happened in the bike world....have seen it on cars..especially rear shoes cracking and splitting

One of my back ones did it. Plenty of meat on it, fine for half the ride, then the pedal went soft, stopped to look and 1 pad had no brake material left on it. No bits left, like it had ripped off, just nothing there, like it hadn't had enough glue or whatever bonds it on.

Scary if it had been the front, so I changed all the pads, just to be sure.

There were some cases reported on superduke.net forum. It was referred to as front brake seizing but (if i remember correctly,) the pads had delaminated, slightly. I think all cases were in Britain; winter salt on the roads, corrosion caused the delaminating or something. If i remember correctly, there was one crash and one or two close calls. One thread went on a very long time, the guy was trying to get the bike returned to KTM.
Brembo calipers, same as on various Ducatis, but no-one had heard of it happening on anything other than the superduke. OEM brake pads; IO think they were Hawk [?], KTM changed to another supplier; you can see it in the Parts Manual.

Anyway I could not find the right pad anywhere, mail order was the only option. I am trying to fit a sv1000 front pad - its 2 mm longer and 3mm narrower. I however think it could be ground to fit in the caliper and therefore work. Lets see.

What, the standard Grimeca caliper? Easy. The most common thing when you search for MZ 660 on ebay. Just avoid the Goldfren brand, apparently they're rubbish. EBC is available, part numbers in the parts/technical specs file.

If you do make some others fit, be very careful to allow enough clearance, remember they get hot and expand. So they might seem fine but then jam when they get hot, and...dangerous.

Yea those are the numbers I am searching for cat. Not finding em sitting on a shelf, in fact the dealers are not even seeing ti as in stock in their suppliers sites.

Get them online somewhere...? So far i know, ebay vendors only offer Goldfren - although that's just what i noticed a couple days ago when i searched to see what MZ parts were on ebay. (I wasn't searching those part numbers.) Main thing is they're Aprilia Pegaso - somewhat more available than MZ. hmmm, makes me think i should get spares.... but then again, i haven't so far because i'd rather get better calipers.

Well Goldfren pads work for me, over 2000 miles so far and no issues, I use my brakes hard so they get a good workout.

My vote goes to EBC sintered. The 2001 Ducati Monster 600 uses the same pads as the 2001 Skorpion, front and rear.

The Grimeca calipers are clones of Brembo calipers to my knowledge,so that gives you plenty choice.

Ha ha ... you're making me think sacreligious thoughts ... see the 98 and later katana 600 and 750 had the same 41mm forks and spacing within 1/8th of an inch. I have thought long and hard about tossing the MZ forks and dropping the whole fork legs, calipers, brake discs - yes plural - have twin discs and wheel and fender into the triples of the mz. Katana forks also have rebound adjustment. And to cap it off the katana rear wheel is a 4.5" which looks like it would drop into the MZ swingarm with very little fuss.
What is preventing me ... the MZ I got has nothing wrong with its forks and I cant justify dropping 3-400 in the FE and rear wheel for no reason. More over, the 98+ katana has single action calipers. 89-96 katana has dual opposed pistons but its ~1/2 inch narrower c/c distance on the forks.
It would be a choice for me ...
