MZ/MuZ Riders

Hey gang,
My 03 baggy has been running wonderful. Haven't had it out in a week, due to rain, Pulled it out this morning to go. With the choke on it would idle but after about 2 or 3 minutes it would stall. I figured cold so I started it again and went on my way. About a mile into my ride it stalled BIGTIME and wouldn't start. It sounded like fuel starvation, But I have gas, and I put it on rez. just to make sure. Answers?

Possible pilot jet clogged,have you drained the left carb? There is a filter in the carb at the fuel input,sometimes cloggs. try this, with the fuel drain on the bowl open, turn the petcock on..fuel should run freely out.
If it does,then the filter is prob not the issue...pilot jet clogs easily...especially with old fuel...I have filled the bowl through the fuel line with carb cleaner and let sit after an hour (approx) drain or try to start...it'll be hard to start...
Also when it does start,add some Seafoam to the tank.....this will keep it clean...I have also had success taking out the pilot mixture screw and spraying the orifice with cleaner making sure to saturate the pilot jet....
Sounds like just dirt or crud in the gas...happens when left for a time with fuel in the bowl...

Weird. It it absolutely won't start, try starting fluid; if it is a fuel issue it will then start right up, and you're half way done diagnosing.

I may take you up on that. It sounds almost electrical, like no spark, or mech. turning over doesnt sound right. I'm smelling fuel as the motor turns over. I'll email ya after the weekend, and see when we can get together. Thanks again!!!

stopping dead in the middle of a ride..hmmm ,happened to me the day i got my baggie,,bloody side stand switch,
there is a post on this forum about all the things that stop a spark in the baggys
ignition switch cluster
handlebar kill switch contacts
neutral switch wire ( pops out the engine case by the front drive)
side stand switch

Sdbct1 brought his MZ Baghira over to my house for a look-see last night, along with a 12 of beer (thanks!), and we went thought the usual check spark, check fuel...noticing that the motor did not appear to have a lot of compression. With the air filter off I noticed air coming back through one of the carbs...and so decided to check the valves.

With the tank off we saw a very obvious problem: a hole through the top of the valve cover with *half* of the compression release sitting on top! So, at a minimum, bent cam, pulley, valve cover, and whatever collateral damage there might be from the bits of compressing release. Harsh, seeing as he just bought the bike (from me) a few weeks ago.

Hard to say for certain, but it looks like the compression release exploded. I know Bill has inferred that the auto compression releases are not reliable at high rpm, but has anyone seen failures of these in low mileage (2,500) stock motors?
