First ride...

..after tuning hopping my Skorpion up exactly the wrong way: new rod, rebalanced crank, SZR first gear(thanks Bill) , 11:1 piston, porting (by someone who knows this head), cam....and stock intake and exhaust. Well, mostly stock - a Tunebike spacer in the carb, and I tore the exhaust apart, ground all the *huge* internal welds down, and tig welded it back together,

It started up just like the stock motor, and around town pretty much sounds and feels the same as the stocker, except that it just keeps going harder and harder from about 4k rpm on up. Sure makes a nice sound up around 6k on full throttle too. It will be a little while before I start regularly wringing it up at higher RPMs, but I don't think it's going to run out of steam till it hits 7500 rpm. The tall first gear is great. You barely notice the higher gear pulling away, but then 2nd is right where it should be.

Hard to say what the power output is, but in the 4-5,000 RPM range I'd guess it's not more than 10-15% better than a stocker. Up higher its a *lot* stronger, but I haven't spent any real time riding in that range yet, and I do need to do a little mixture and timing work. I'll try to ride it around a bit like this and then dyno it in the spring.

Just what I wanted.

Did you do the ignition that Bill sells? Raising the RPM limit does a lot with the extra power you will be making at higher RPM's.

Right now I have the stock ignition in it, as I wanted to minimize variables when I started it up. But I have an Ignitech unit sitting here ready to go (and a spare), and I put a few more reference timing marks on the flywheel so I can easily verify that the Ignitech is giving me what is says it is. I also bought and installed a MAP sensor on the intake, so I can play with advance at different loads as well as RPM. But I'm going to ride it as is for a few more days, then start making changes one at a time.
