So why is it bad to use a 14 tooth front sprocket and 39 on the rear, on a Skorp?

puts too much of stress on the output shaft at the sprocket 15 is ok
always better to play with the rear sprocket size
14x39 = 2.7857
15x42 = 2.8
i find both a bit tall unless your doing track days or racing

Changing one tooth on the front is equivelent to three on the rear. Take one off the front = adding three to the rear, and vice versa.

I was very happy when switching from 15/39 to 15/43. I wished I had a taller 1st gear now but everything from 2nd on up is golden. You may think you are running too many rpms on the highway at first but these engines like the revs. I also get much better chain/swing arm clearance with the larger rear sprocket.

checked mine it is 15x43 = 2.86 used to be 15x39
and works better for me as speed limits in my area in town are 40 mph or less and only go up to 55mph
in the country except 70 on the interstate

So it has to do with the chain trying to make too small of a turn around and beats the shaft and bearing to death where as a larger front allows a smoother transisition around the gear and is getting less of a pulsation/ pounding from the single cylinder fireing, for the area of sprocket? or something like that....

The way I understand it, the mechanical advantage that the smaller gear gives you puts more strain than is necessary on that bearing. You can get the same final drive ratio by going to a bigger rear sprocket.
Also the smaller diameter of the 14 tooth gives you less swing arm clearance.

I see the clearence issue. Swingarm guard is GONE!!!! When I bought my Traveller and rode home to Salt Lake in Utah, from North Carolina, it had an 14 tooth front. I returned to stock, but it really made a differance in performance. I'll most likely go to a 42 rear and regain the pep it lost. top speed is also down about 5mph. wont pull past 90 now and had pulled almost 100 with the 14 tooth up fromt. 5k in elevation didnt help performance at all either!!! hehe.
Loving Emil Muz all the same!!! (Emil Muz is a"bad guy" charecter in the movie Dragnet with Tom Hanks and Dan Acroyd) TIME FOR An 10.5:1 720 KIT AND CAM!!!! YEE HAAAA!!!

You should definitely be getting better top end with either gearing. My Traveller would do 100mph with my 300lb ass on it as soon as I got the second carb functioning properly and that was with 15/39 gearing. She was probably putting out a measly 35hp true rwhp back then so you may want to look into some carb work and a nice new chain to find some more giddy up. Don't forget about the crap stock air filter, constricting header welds and piddling fuel cock either. The latter can really be a problem with extended full throttle runs once you start finding ways for your engine to breath better. When I put my bike on the dyno, it was draining the carb bowls around the 6 sec mark anywhere above 6000rpms making for some nice fire works out the nearly open race exhaust. Not good for engine!!!

BMW1200, huh. I've got an '83 Suzuki 1100ESD that is WELL breathed on, if I feel the need to get stupid. It tops out at around 155-ish (and only because it runs out of RPM.) it JUST tips into the high9s/low 10s in the 1320 with me riding. I just don't enjoy manhandeling that 550 pound beast around in the mountains.

The speedo would read a bit over 105 with the 14 tooth and just under 100 with the 15. My GPS was the reading I posted for mph previousely. I've never had SOOO much fun going so slow!!!! The Traveller is so flickable and to 40 mph is fairly quick. It rides better 2 up than my 1100ESD Suzuki. And they say ya can't tour on a single.....
