Baghira 660 ignition-running problem

Hello guys!
I am new to the forum and the new owner of a Baghira 660 '02 model!
I own the bike only for 5 days now and unfortunately a problem came up yesterday..

The first 3 days' driving was completely normal, but the next day the bike started "choking" when I accelerated or had the throttle stable in the 1st and 2nd gear (kind of like instant failures in power delivery). After a while, when I was braking to stop at a traffic light, the engine stopped several times as my speed and revs lowered, even if I held the clutch (I had to keep the revs up to keep it working). This happened only when I had a gear in (especially 1st or 2nd), if I switched it to Neutral I had no problem at all. The ignition also didn't work some of the times the bike stalled.
At first I thought maybe it was bad fuel, so I emptied the tank (the filter was ok because the fuel was running out without any problems), the carb was recently cleaned by the previous owner, and everything else seems ok (oil etc).
Today, the problem is different.
When I'm in neutral and press the ignition, the bike starts normally and revs without any problems. The moment I put a gear it shuts down immediately, and the ignition doesn't work, but if I put it in neutral again, it works! I tried putting 2nd gear while moving but the same thing happens!
My owner told me to check the side stand because he had the wires coming from the relay isolated (don't know why) and the insulation seems to have been torn. I tried isolating the wires again and put some duct tape on both wire ends, but the problem remains.
I searched some Yamaha forums and a few people had the same problem with their XT660, caused by the side stand switch.
Did anyone here have the same problem? Any opinions on what I should check?

Thank you and sorry about the long post!

I'm sure Davids pointing you in the right direction.

But, make sure the vent/breathing tube, from the petrol tank cap, is unblocked and not stopped up.

Sit on the bike, choke on, side stand up and try it again. maybe let it warm up a bit first.

Could be lack of fuel due to vacuum lock on the tank not allowing fuel to flow enough.

Regardless, carb problems and sidestand electric problems are issues that tend to crop up on occasion with baghiras so you should be able to get this fixed pretty easy.

Problem solved!

My initial thought was right, the wires coming behind the side stand lost the connection, probably caught in the chain or sth..I put them back together and insulated them with tape and now the bike is moving normally again! I don't know if the wires are supposed to be like that but with the modification made by the previous owner, I couldn't think of anything else to do, so now I just have to start the bike in neutral when the side stand is down, which is fine by me..

Thank you both for the answers!
