Just returned from the Isle of Man and Manx GP, whilst there got chatting to a fellow Mzeder and he related tales of big bore 2 stoke engines fitted to bikes with sidecars originating in Europe e.g. Germany, Denmark. Therefore can any one shed any light on this as a future project is to fit a sidecar to a MZ and increasing the engine capacity would help in pulling the extra weight.

punch out a 250 to 300 get lots of fins on head and gear it for a top speed of about 100kph
get the chair and bike light as well as the load
backpacking lite loads best place to start
and expect the motor to be trash in 15,000 miles or sooner
speed on the road 50 to 55mph
the only thing harder on a bike than a sidecar is a crazy kid
engine best to use the 750cc 3 cylinder water cooled Suzuki water buffalo
and the word poor will not even come close to describing the gas mileage
any thing under 750 is to small except town use or trips of a local nature ....
over 750 will get you going fast enough to under stand what the words " NASTY HANDLING BITCH " means in English
and it truly is a fast way to trash a motor
laying in the repair bin in the shop 1 r60/2 motor and
one r50s motor
the r60 is very bad
the r50s i stopped on it before it was toast
the side car i was using was light enough i can still pick the whole thing up and carry it with out the bike attached
an i am 67years old on the 17th of sept
it trashed 2 bmw motors in less than 30,000 miles and down hill it might get to 60mph with the wife in it
here in the usa horsepower is the name of the game slow lanes on the interstate highways are scary any more
the slow lane is usually 65to 70 in some areas i have been it was 6 lanes and a parking lot going 75 to 80 mph
i found an exit and took a slower road

Remind me never to let you close to any of my bikes Dave! Did over 20,000 on an MZ TS250/1 with a lightweight chair in 2 years, engine was as sweet when I sold it as when I bought it. Never going to be fast but take it easy and watch the countryside go by. The 300cc engined apparently have a bit more torque but I never noticed much difference riding solo. And there's nothing better for upper body exercise than trying to keep the front wheel pointing in the right direction when sticking an MZ outfit round a roundabout. Always meant to make some leading links for it but never got round to it .
Over here we can get away without the cubes!
ES250 Doppelport, ES250, ES250/1, ES250/2,ETS 250, ES150, ETS150, BK350, IWL Pitty, SR56 Wiesel, SR59 Berlin, Troll............ and thats just the German two strokes!

i used the bikes with and with out the chair
here we have a joke
every where you go is up a steep hill from where you are !
and going up a hill is always hard on a motor
dave
i am not a PRO at blowing up motors
i have 20,000 miles on an rt125 and its only been hauled home once ..a very bad tank of gas
coming back from a long trip

I think your friend may have been referring to the Koenig outboard motor powered outfits raced at the Isle of Man for a few years. I can also remember some sidecar outfits powered by Archimedes Penta outboard engines and DKW Two stroke car motors.

Hi boilermaker, yes I can remember the racing outfits fitted with out board boat engines if my memory serves me right the Keonig looked like an oblong aluminum box with 2 carbs and exhaust protruding out. There was also a European couple Rudi Kurth and Dane Rowe (very good looking lady)that raced a Crescent boat engined outfit very successfully in the 70's. The last all British sidecar to win a TT was a Barton 2 stroke but I'm not sure where this derived from engine wise.
Now the sidecar that my acquaintance was talking about was a MZ road going outfit, ironically I note that in a article titled "Something unusual lurking in my workshop" in the last issue of the MZ Rider magazine, the article describes an engine from a mid sixties moto crosser with a long stroke crank, allegedly supplied by the MZ comp shop along with 300cc barrel and spacer to give 360cc.
So has one of our continental cousins taken this on board (outboard) and now tweaking engines to this configuration for road going bikes?
Any information would gratefully be received!
