ETZ 301 Saxon Fun issues

Hello,

I've recently purchased an MZ ETZ 301 Saxon 'fun' and I am having (what I believe to be) fuelling issues with it.

When I first got it, it started without choke and ran, but would not idle. It was a bit scary in this state as it didn't run all that well and I had to keep it running with the throttle. The Plug was black = running rich. So I removed the carburettor to see if the idle jet was blocked, and it was not. However, I did find that underneath the main jet holder (it is a 'BING' type carb) was a load of dirt. I cleaned out the dirt and re assembled the carb, giving it a thorough clean with carb cleaner. I re set the air screw to 1 and a quarter turns out (as in my Haynes manual) and then set up the throttle stop screw so the bike idles at 1500rpm when warm. The bike still starts with no choke, but it seemed to run better.

So, I fired it up to go to work this morning, and it all seemed ok. The bike ran crisply and I headed off to work. Just as I was about to get on the motorway the bike cut out as I tried to pull away. I thought that I had run out of fuel, so I switched to reserve and started the bike. It started OK and revved up nicely. So I went to pull away again, and the bike died again. I started the bike for a third time (again with no choke) and got back on. I gave it a little choke and managed to nurse the bike home. It didn't run very well with a bit of choke, but it ran.

To me, it seems like the bike only cuts out when hot (as with my other bikes this short run to the motorway junction is enough to get them up to temperature) and it definately only occurs under load. All I did to the carb beyond cleaning it is change the air screw to standard (it was 1 and a quarter turns out when I took the carb off anyway) and adjust the throttle stop screw. I did try lowering the needle, but the bike wouldn't start so I returned it to standard. The air filter doesn't seem to be blocked, but if it was I can't understand why putting the choke on after starting the bike would make it run OK. I can't also see how the bike could be running lean after it was running so rich before. I haven't done a plug chop since I've fiddled with the carb, and that will be my next course of action.

Any ideas? I really need this bike to get to work on!

ps, Hello, nice forum you've got here! ;)

when you did the carb -----did you do the TANK and clean the filter in the petcock (fuel tap)
and check fuel hose for a kink my saxon tour had a kinked hose one day and was a pain
and if the float in the Bing carb is brass it may have cracked from age shake it to see if it has fuel in it...

Perhaps you should direct your enquiry to mz_riders@yahoogroups.com, at least you would get more info

Sorted now.

Turns out I hadn't tightened the main jet holder enough, and it vibrated loose. The engine started and ran OK off of the idle jet, but when it was put under load and the main jet came into play it died.

I removed the float bowl without removing the carb, and I replaced the jet holder, tightened it and tightened the main jet in the top of the holder. It runs and rides fine now! :)

To colm54... why do I need to direct my question to a Yahoo group when there is a perfectly good forum? If I was a cynical man, it would be easy to believe that your post was in fact telling me to piss off. Being that I am not a cynic, I'll settle for your post just being pretty unhelpful.

Thanks to DAVID THOMPSON for your help.

Where are all the forum using MZ owners these days anyway? Maybe they've all been told to go away and use the Yahoo group instead! ;)

You are right Marjay I was a little unhelpful, although this is an international forum, the yahoo group is mainly based in England and covers every aspect of the ES, ETS, TS and ETZ twostroke varients.

Hello!

Thompson, I agree with you.

City police said my bike is very smoker but cops nothing said to "Hummer" owners, drink aprox. 19liters/100kms. When I see this "panzers" in the city ask myself "are we in the war again?".

Saludos, Manuel.
