MZ/MuZ Riders

Having bought an ETZ 251 am enjoying my return to MZ's after a 15 years away from them. A great improvement over my old Supa5. Pulls like a train even into head wind. However those footrests and and resultant riding position are terrible!! Iv'e been running a BMW R80 which is an extremely comfortable machine so this is a bit of a disapoinment. Has anyone carried out any mods to the footrests to bring them further back and down. John

The footrests are little more than a tube with brackets welded on, should be easy enough to fabricate a lower set. However, the footrest acts as the stop for the rear brake lever, so this may need to be fabricated as well a much more complex project. It may be easier to fit higher bars, to alter your riding position. Trial bike bars work well for me, with a little juggling you should find the original cables fit , you just need a longer brake pipe. I also ride a BMW R100 so know what you mean about the difference in riding position,

I'll be sorting this out on mine over the next few weeks. I'll post up the result.

My brake pedal is already heavily modified (it has an industrial grade limit switch for the brake light) and has been modified to suit the already modified foot rests. They are in normal position, but are folding motocross style footrests, not the rubber tube ones.

I have carried out a simple mod which has improved it a little. The footrest bar is bolted to the frame by one long bolt and two short ones. I removed the two shorter bolts and swung the bar down which had the effect of both lowering the footrests and pushing them further back. The limits are the bar will touch the silencer on the right and foul the kick start lever on the bottom of its swing. A couple of short brackets connected up to the rear fixing make every thing secure. As I say it is an improvement but not the complete answer. I guess the other option is to raise the seat but dont really want to do this. These footrests are the one thing that spoil a really nice bike.

once mine is back on the road, I'm considering fitting rearset footpegs.....

but something I changed on my ETZ251, is the handlebars.....


the footpegs are in the standard position, but I changed the handlebars to a set of almost flat ones....

I think they rise around 1/2", but only kick back slightly (1" further back at the end from the rise bend)


it personally improved the riding position (for me) considerably......
and I'm a big heavily built lad


I cant tell you what bars they are, as they were secondhand to be (they were in the shed).......
but it might be worth considering.......

Well, despite my comments yesterday, today I removed the seat to see what could be done to raise it. Its only the front of the seat thats the problem, so re attached the two rear fixings and raised the front with two pieces of wood which had the effect of raising the front 1 inch. A trip around my normal test route were very favourable and will probably be good enough for my needs. Now will have to fabricate a couple of brackets to make the front of seat secure. The seat height to footrests is now 20 inches. I measured the seat height on my BMW R80, guess what 20 inches!! John
