MPG MPH? MZ ETZ250.

Postby Outrider » Tue Feb 21, 2012 10:52 am

On an MZ ETZ250 What would be reasonable MPG to expect. I realize it does depend on riding style, but just an idea of it?
Also, on same bike, will it cruise at 70MPH?

Thanks for any replies.

Hi Outrider,

Yes the ETZ250 should cruise at 70mph wind and gradient permitting, the bike I had would run all day at 5,250 rpm, 5,500 rpm at a push, but having some mechanical sympathy I would not push it more, I covered 45,000 miles on that bike.

70 mph you should get 45-55 mpg
Average of between 55-65 mpg

I would knock ten off the top figure and ten off the speed too.

Unless where you live is airfield flat 70mph is unlikely (in my experience) to return that sort of MPG

Oh, you need to rev it and hard, plenty of that, just not for forty miles +++

My experience,

Home to Applecross (Scotland)and return 460 miles of Motorway trying to keep 5200 revs, the rest 220 miles brisk riding up to the maximum revs through the gears 6000 revs,

Mpg for the trip 59 mpg.

Though my brother who came with me on his BMW K75s averaged 62 mpg.

The thing with the engine was it had power boost at 4800 rpm so you needed to be above that to keep in the power.

When I had an ETZ 250 I found it was happier cruising nearer 65 than 70 mph. When it was fitted with a 301 engine (and geared to suit), 70 became more 'comfortable'.
As for fuel consumption, very variable depending on conditions. Normal running around was probably about 55-60 mpg (UK gallons), but ride it hard and the fuel consumption soared! I remember riding from Glasgow to one of the winter rallies at Dent in wind that was so strong that I couldn't use top gear at all. Thrashing the bike in fourth led to 40 mpg!
When the bike had the 301 engine, a friend rode it to Germany and back, with luggage and cruising at 70 mph on the autobahns. It returned about 55 mpg, whilst my Skorpion did 75.

Later when I fitted a 300cc top end it made no difference to the top speed, fuel consumption, or power band, but it pulled harder in all gears.

Well worth doing.
