ETZ crank seal replacement without splitting cases

I am sure i have read somewhere that it is possible to replace ETZ 250 crank seals without splitting the engine.. or am i imagining things? I do have the parts to rebuild the engine, but to be honest other than the bike blowing clouds of blue/white smoke (i don't mean the normal blue haze of a stroker) it runs fine. so i have got a spare clutch gasket and crank seals as well as the pullers for the alternator and clutch.

How do i do it? if its possible. what needs to come off, and can it be done with engine in frame?.. id like my zed back on the road and tested asap.

Definitely possible to fit new seals without cracking the case - even possible on the later-model TS, thank goodness! Only the very early ETS and TS models had the seals behind the main bearings.

From the look of the parts catalogues and the exploded diagrams (plus knowing that the ETZ is just an overgrown TS anyway) it seems the ETZ crankseals are also behind the alternator rotor and clutch. They should press in from the outside easily enough - but you'll need to drain the oil from the clutch and dismantle the alternator to get at the sealing plates - behind those are the seals. You should be able to just pop them out, but if not you can twist a couple of self-tapping woodscrews through them and then use a pair of pliers on the screw to get a better grip.

Couple of links that might help.

And don't forget that there is a wire circlip outboard of the seals. They are more difficult to remove than the seals!
