Timing RT125/3

Postby Stuart109 » Tue May 26, 2015 11:57 am

Have just dusted off my 1961 RT125/3 which I rebuilt a couple of years ago.
Its not registered and after much correspondence with the DVLA I have finally got the form to register.
I have had it dated by the MZ owners club and need to get it an MOT before parting with my £50 to complete the registration.
Took it for a quick ride today and it was running a bit hot. Some playing with the points made it run better but I would like to set the timing properly.
Trouble is I can't remember how I did it last time.
Can anyone help?

Thanks for the reply.

Having had a go at it now I remember what a pain it was to set last time.

The points gap is, as you say 0.4mm at the highest part of the cam, and the timing is 4.5mm before TDC.

However, having set the gap, when I move the points back plate the tolerances are such that the gap adjustment changes as the back plate rotates.

The points assembly has two lugs that engage with a grove on the dynamo front. Don't know if it just old age, but the grove is somewhat wider than the lugs.

So I have set the points to just open at 4.5mm BTDC, which I think is the point at which the spark is generated. At this setting it seems to start and run well. Will take it for a ride this weekend to test. Must also measure the points gap to see how close it is to .4mm.

Am still trying to get it registered for the first with DVLA, what a palaver! I have now sent off form V55 but not entirely certain it is the right form as many of the questions seemed irrelevant.

We live in hope.

Everything is running fine now. I checked the points gap at the highest part of the cam and it was over 1mm. Not sure of the reason why, but am confident that the spark is al least appearing in the right place.

The registration saga continues. I sent off form V55/5 as requested but it has come back this morning. Apparently I need a NOVA reference number. This is a notification of vehicle arrival (in the UK). As I'm not a VAT registered vehicle imported I can't use the online facility so have just spent half an hour in a queue waiting to speak to someone in the HRMC. Their first response was I don't need a NOVA. But after a bit of a discussion they thought I might, so they are sending me form. Apparently, I won't be able to answer many of the questions on the form, as I don't know anything about the vehicle history, so I need to explain all this is a covering letter. I await the form and then my NOVA registration.

Form V55/5 has a lot of questions about the vehicles MSVA (motorcycle single vehicle approval) although absolutely nothing about NOVA, which is strange as the form is to register imported vehicles. So I assume my next application DVLA will also be rejected because I don't have a MSVA.

On is tempted to ride unregistered.

threw history every generation has hated government

the only thing it seems to do is make everyone mad at it

like giving some one a hard time getting a title for his car or motorcycle

here where i live the licence dept of the state government has been in the hot seat

about being uncooperative and very inefficient

so welcome to the waiting line :)
here we take a number and at closing time go home and come back and start with a new mumber

It's at times like those i often find myself remembering the scenes that depicted the hypocrisy and paperwork trail in the film 'Brasil'.
