ETZ250 Model Differences.

Postby brennain1 » Sat Jun 13, 2015 3:07 am

Hi all, can anyone point me to where I might find the differences between the various Etz250 models and when the changes came into being. So for instance when they changed to disc brake? What type of carbs were used? Any differences in tank capacity? What year did they change the tank styling? When they switched from points to electronic ignition etc. Basically what I'm after is a timeline/history lesson for the evolution of the Etz250. Any help greatly appreciated.

As far as I know the disk brake was available on the ETZ250 from the launch in 1981. It was also available in a basic form with a drum brake and a premix engine. From memory this also came without tacho and had the key switch in the tacho housing.
The fuel tank was 17l including a 1.5l reserve, and the bike was only fitted with points ignition.

The ETZ251, with the banana tank was introduced in 1988/9.The engine was redesigned with changes to the exhaust, piston porting, carb etc. Again from memory this bike was always fitted with electronic ignition. They also reverted to a 16" rear wheel and shortened the frame. The tank although a different shape was the same capacity. I seem to remember there were a few different elecronic ignitions used in the production run that finished in 1991 before the plant was sold to Turkey and production continued by Kanuni in 1993. There were a few cosmetic changes during the production run but nothing major.

Now let the corrections start!

That's interesting, when did they switch to the Bing carbs though?

That may take a bit of research... I haven't had that much to do with the ETZs! I would guess at 1990 when they did various other changes.

G-plate 1989/90 ETZ251s were fitted with points and still had a BVF from the factory.

J plate 1991 metal ETZ301s were fitted with a Bing, and the ones I've seen have points, but they may have been fitted to replace a diff ignition sender.

Plastic tanked Saxons were all fitted with Bings and electronic ingition.
