USD Forks

Hey! doesn't Buffet ride, maybe he'd be interested in the company?
Folks here had stated that YZ forks could be used and after seeing the cost for Ohlins (I wish...) I figured that I experiment and chance the YZ route. I've noticed that quite a few YZ's are being parted with blown mtrs, with the rest of the parts looking pretty good. Hopiing that there are a few honest folks out there I bought a used set from an '03 and Tag upper. I'll still need to get the lower, stem and other bits but at least it's a start. I've always like the feel of the smaller bars, though the fat bars look cool I'll stay with the stock controls for now. Never done anything like this and hope that I haven't screwed up so far...we'll see.
Went to the Yamaha shop in the next town for an oil filter with part number in hand (THANK YOU FORUM!) and also picked up a KN-145, quite a differents in the products guts, mesh vs holes, element serface folds look to be almost double on the KN...
I'd wish you luck with the Moto as well as the gentleman from MZ, but I figure you've got it in the briefcase! ;-)
Regards,
Robert

I have the YZ USD frontend on mine. The YZ neck bearings and races are the exact same 52mm diameter as the stock MZ bearings. They do however insert too deep into the neck. That was easily taken care by a bit of yankee engineering. I bought a 52mm piston with 2 compression rings. I insert 1 under each of the bearing races as they were installed into the neck.

I took 4 inches from the length so the fork is now 1.5" shorter than the reduced height Baggy fork was. I also made a set of adjustible links for the rear to lower it by the same amount. The bike is never used offroad. I live in a very mountanous area so the bike is solely used as a canyon carver. It is quite sweet. The engine is tock with an M4 pipe and a set of dual FCR's. The only thing I still want to do to her is change those boo-tuggly plastics.

fasrnu,
Great information and pictures!
I have a M4 system on my '01 HR Baghira also.
I understand from you and others on this forum that the way to go is the Keihn route. What size FCRs did you use on your stock engine, why and hows the tuneability?
Were there issues in the installation?
Regards
Robert

My FCR's are both 35mm flat slides. I made a custom filter setup using exhaust tubing I bought from Pep Boys. I changed the main jets to 140 and the bike starts and idles great as well as run like it is scared throughout the full rpm range. I am getting 39 mpg when I have been tearing up the twisties and 45 mpg on the highway. The performance difference between these and the stock weirdo carb setup is awesome.

The Keihin FCR's are the badboys for your bike, expensive but man to they change your bike! As for the body work i will soon have an alternative for you. I am also working on a new tank for the MUZ in the new year, i need to fabricate one from scratch first! Was going to have all new plastics made from Carbon but the cost is telephone numbers so that's out of the question at the moment! I really like the conversion on your bike dude, looks great, but you really need to chop those nasty roll bars off, yuck!!!! :(

fasrnu,
Thank you for the information.
When my forks get here and I've checked them for being true I'll pester you some more about the details.

Wonky,
Looked at the cost of a replacement set of plastic, tank and extra subframe that I could modify and always have the originals for reference, WOW, I could buy another complete MZ for what those clowns wanted.
I have a bit of experience with fiberglass and when the tasks at hand (forks and carb set) are done. I'm considering making some moulds that would allow me modification without destroying the origianals.
Like you stated I'm not hot on the roll bars, but the basic plastic is ok with maybe trim/change to the front fender. Because the plastic from other brands is so much cheaper I might consider my "tests" on Yamadog MX items including sub frame but that's later.
Summer is just around the next corner :smt023

Had a very quick blast around the yard on Wonky's bike, and my God does it feel different to the stock set up! cannot put it into words, but will be doing a similar conversion when I can (although FCR carbs will be first.

Thanks for your time to when I came over, and that of Martin, who was obviously busy.

just back from Poland-bloody cold, but dry, and will start my bike in earnest at Christmas when work has died down. May even spend Christmas day in the garage-it can be my present to myself-10 hours of quality time.

And Wonky, PM'd you too.

Dude, in an ideal world with evryone in the bike industry pulling their fingers out and sorting my parts out then you would all be able to either hate on my bike or love it, whatever the case may be. I am waiting for brakes to arrive from Italy and set unit to get here. The wrong seat unit arrived and a new one was meant to be with me last week, i'm told it will be here tomorrow. Once i have the seat unit the pipes can be sorted, the seat can be made, etc, etc. Sorry to dangle the carrot for so long but the projects gone two months over and i'm pulling my hair out, what's left of it. I'm sorry guys but my hands are tied. It's a waiting game, i've chewed my fingers to bits and nearly smashed my bike up twice! That's projects for you. I have had so much to consider that never even came into thought from day one. I have had to take into consideration that all the parts i am fitting must be available off-the-shelf for other MZ riders to purchase should they wish to do a Slipstream conversion. This has added a whole new angle on things, i'm trying to keep it cost effective for everyone but at the same time enhancing the bike and not making it look like a bag of shyte, dilema after dilema! To be honest with you it's all come down to custom front-end, which you've seen, set unit, hugger, front guard, painted wheels, swingarm and other parts and a tuned engine. The tank is such a pain in the ass that getting anything made to customise it is an absolute nightmare. We are working on it but i have so much other work to do aswell. We are very very close to building the bike and we will absolutely NOT start untill everything is here and ready to fit. I know i've said it before but after all the phone-calls and everything else we are nearly ready to start and i promise you i will post images as soon as i can. I have other responsibilities to a certain magazine that's featuring the bike and untill that's completed i can't reveal anything else. It may sound anal to some people but that's just the way it is for now. Again my apologies but sit tight and you'll get exclusive images and info as soon as i am able, as promised! MZ riders members will be eligable for discounts too! I can't bite the hand that feeds me buddy! :-D
