Relay Unit

Hi All, need some advice please. My relay unit keeps packing up! on my second one now and dont know what to do or whats causing it...however...I did change the rear light for a twin LED unit and changed the rear indicators for led also....would these blow the relay unit?

If so, what could I do? will have to call BSA on Monday for replacement relay unit

Apart from that my Bike is ready to ride and will upload my freshly built bike....I feel so proud......well almost

which model bike and name or number or what relay is used for

leds use a bunch less power and should not be the problem
unless they have a load resistor built in to make the stock flasher work
which is a bad design
or sounds like the wireing is shorting to ground some where

if bike is a BP several fellows have had problems with pinched wireing harness under the seat or behind body panels
careful inspection of wireing harness is first place i would start

Thanks for the reply, its on my Skorpion sports 96, the relay unit is the default part for this bike. I was told that these relays are weak and it would be worth finding a replacement from another bike...anybody have any suggestions?

If you are talking about the main relay for all of the electrics, then a normal 12v spotlamp relay can be adapted to fit.

All I can tell you is that its under the riders seat next to the fuses? I am rubbish with electrics as you can guess......so I'm assuming you mean I can purchase any relay unit and fit it? doh!! sorry

The main relay on the Baghira is a small relay (with a aluminium case) mounted to teh frame next to the indicator relay.
To fit a normal relay requires some adaptation of teh wiring connections, but internally they are the same.
It might be worth buying a good quality relay.

Spot light relay connections form ths pattern

- or l indicates connection on relay and its orientaion. Please ignore the dots as I had to put them in tfor everything to line up
Connect as follows
Connection number 1 to rt/sw
Connection number 2 to rt/sw
Connection number 3 to gn (I think)
Connection number 4 to rt/ws

I think rt = Red
sw = Black
ws = White
gn = ?

Maybe others can confirm the wire colours as I am not sure.

the only relay to be found in the Skorpion is that for the starter. It is a standard unit used on many many Motorcyclesw from Aprilia to Yamaha and can be replaced with almost any other such relay with a 12.v. spool. It is not particularly fragile or flaky.

about every third one will work or is exactly the same, starting with that "Ducati" solenoid close to the top.

You know what yours looks like. Look for something similar. Since most Japanese bikes have the same starter like this one from a Suzuki GSXR:

it stands to reason that most Hitachi starter solenoids will be strong enuf.

Great thx for the replies! I have ordered what I now know to be the starter relay and didnt even consider the solenoid! The starter relay makes clicking noises etc. Have ordered 2 in case the next one packs up again...if it does I'm assuming what your saying is that the problem could indeed be the solenoid?

The relay and the solenoid are one and same thing in this case. The starter, unlike a car starter, has no solenoid or Bendix.

Ah, so the problem is solved. I was thinking of one of the other relays fitted to the Baghira, the stop relay, which is bolted onto the frame adjacent to the indicator relay.
The stop realy can be replaced with a normal accesory relay available from car shops.
As for starter relays, any replacement must have both of the wires for the control coil avaialble. One that is connected to the starter button, the other to earth. A diode is connected in parralel to thes wires, not sure why.
Most Honda ones can be adapted to fit, and if necassary, some older cars ones might be adaptable for fitment.

A diode is connected in parallel to these wires, not sure why.

just for safety's sake. The relay spool doesn't care which is plus and which is minus; it will pull either way unless the plunger is a permanent magnet. Neither does the starter as far as that goes, tho it would turn the wrong way.
Again excluding permanent magnet motors.
Current flows from minus to plus in a diode. With the diode in parallel, exchanging the plus and minus will then create a short circuit, blowing the fuse but nothing else will happen.
Seriously, the diode is about a useful as a fifthwheel on a car (German expression). In the harnesses I have made there are no diodes at all.

Weeeeeeeee!! it started after i replaced the starter sollenoid!!! well pleased...however....the M4 exhaust is..........LOUD! I have a sneaky feeling I could be getting stopped by the police more than once with this exhaust fitted!
