Edelbrock Raptor Carb Kit

Just opened the box. Very nice looking piece of work. The kit includes a 2 into 1 manifold with gaskets and a complete throttle assembly, tube, cables everything. It also came with a plenum for use on the Raptor with its airbox. Won't be using that. Just reading thru manual, sometimes I do that, and this thing is pretty cool. No jets. Externally adjustable needle. Externally adjustable accelerator pump. 36x42 bore.

Once engine is assembled I bolt this thing on and see how it does. I'll post results.

Steve,
I have often been curious about this kit..seems it is a good piece.
Anxious as to results...we all know that the FCR's and TM Mikuni's
work well, just gives another option.
I am curious about the throttle cable etc as this kit is designed for a
Raptor, you may need to modify it or use your existing setup..give us
any significant details on the install..

and I am not impressed by the claimed power figures 39.7 BHP. My Baggi, with the only mod being a BSM Future pipe made just over 46 bhp at the rear wheel a year or 2 back.

I don't know if there will be any significant horsepower gain or not. Thats not where I expect to be making big HP gains. Compression and Displacement are where I'm expecting the gains to be coming from. As far as the Graph on the Edlbrock website is concerned, you have to remember those figures are for an ATV. If those figures were taken at the rear wheels (plural) it makes sense. The HP lose through the ATV drivetrain will always be much more then on a single rear wheeled motorcycle. The important bit of knowledge gained from the graph if the percent of HP increase. Maybe one of the rocket scientist here maybe able to extrapolate the gains when that percentage is applied to an MZ. Maybe not.

Either way the ease of adjustment is way cool and the uniqueness is even way cooler.

I will post updates and results as this project progresses.

I'm having fun putting this bike together and can't wait to get it on the track in the spring.

I may be a little drunk right now but a quick peek at my solar power calculator shows a 10% increase. However it is pitch dark and 11:13pm

Stock carb intake side is 43mm diameter on the primary and 35mm on the secondary = 1452+962 mm2= 2414mm2 total intake area available to feed motor at full throttle.

Edelbrock mentioned above is 36mm intake = 1018 mm2 total intake area. This is way more restrictive than stock....without question. This is NOT going to breathe better....comrade.

Based on the above calculations, I'm baffled as to the tangible performance to be gained by using the 36 intake x 42 output Edelbrock ....

My (also) moto crazy friend Steve offered this ....

"The smaller carbs will give higher air/fuel velosity, most likely better atomization, and better torque. If they're for ATVs, perhaps lower RPM performance is better than higher top end horsepower? Also, the Raptors had the little Mikuni carbs on them from the factory, and the new ones are FI and four valve. The Raptor is heavier, and pulls fat tires.

I've found Edelbrock to be a bit off center for motorcycles. The tech guru for Harley products invited me to ride the Edelbrock demo Big Twin 95cu" with hot cams, compression, and their super duper carb back in '01 or '02. I brought it back overheated, pinging, and running like shit after a 10 to 15 minute ride around their Torrance factory. Years earlier, the Edelbrock Quicksilver carb which was CARB approved and OEM for the early Buells around '95 was mostly problems although Edlebrock said it was much better than Mikuni, just that people didn't adjust it correctly. Whatever......"
