Do KTM NECK BEARING SIZES FIT THE NECK OF THE BAGHIRA

Postby claytonb » Fri Feb 08, 2008 7:51 am

Hi guys,
Does anyone know what is the outside diameter of a KTM neck bearing?
Why this question you might ask....well my ultimate question would be can a KTM from end fit the neck of the baghira?

The only bearing OD size swap since I've been on this site is Yamaha.
Why the question?
Stem size and length is as important related to the bearings ID and how thick a bearing is.

Very much doubt it, although KTM have produced so many models over the years, it is possible.

However, yamaha YZ 450 forks and yokes fit (Wonky will confirm this) but I am sur he had some Ohlins for a Baghira all ready to bolt on.

Whysub is right on. I have a set of forks ready to install, when I get the springs for my weight. The bearing size is related to the application and Mark and Fastrnu have done this swap.
YZ bearings and parts fit but spacers are required as the head set is too large.
Fastrnu sold his Baghira / SM (To be correct) or to be more correct, gave it away...
Made me sick to see someone so talented let a project "go away".
Talented men are smart and his choises I respect.
Both had wider triples made for their projects.
I'll look into triple trees and spacers for us all when I get my set installed and any bugs worked out.
Right now I've purchased a frame to look into frame modifactions to deal with carb / injection problems.
Not to make anyone think that I understand anything about carbs...I'm just considering clearance bs.

Yes yes I knew about the YZ forks fitting the neck of the baghira thanks to you OMC, wonky and fastnu. Infact I am hunting for a set. Just wondered if any more fitments are available. KTM parts seem to be more available than YZ parts.

Well the problem I see for the time being when fitting the yz forks is the wheel. From what I read the mz wheel will not fit the yz forks/triple clamps arrangement.

Hey OMC you got a new frame to cut up? Seems like you are into some series mods. Keep us update ej!

OMC I think you can use original YZ triple clamps. If I purchase as set of forks I intend to use the original triple clamps and then purchase an aftermarket set. Whats your opinion?

Yes Whysub wonky had some nice fancy ohlins which cost a small fortune though. He also had custom made clamps at his shop but also cost a small fortune. I think fastnu had aftermarket clamps from a brand TAG. Could it be?

Do you have triple clamps already sorted?

Clayton,

Actually fasrnu made his own triple set like Mark. If you look close you'll see this
The originals and after markets only leave about an 1/8 of an inch or less tire clearance when running a 120.
If you follow ebay you'll be surprised at how many YZ fork sets come through in great condition including after market triples like the Tags that came with my set. These days spoiled rich kids are in abundance and with mom and dad giving them what ever they want. I've personally watched brand new bikes get blown up sold as scrap and the cycle of replacement kept being repeated. Get it, cycle of replacement...I crack myself up.
I'll get the set ready first then get a wider set of triples machined useing the Tags as an example.

 good one ! Yes I noticed that. I was amazed how much forks you can find in the US. I am not quite sure about it but from what I could see from some pics the original YZ triple tree are sloped inwards so to speak. What I mean is that the distance between the forks at the top is bigger than the distance in the bottom. Measurements from centre to centre obviosly. Can you confirm this OMC?

Clayton

The diameter of a YZ fork leg is larger where the lower clamp attaches, the center to center is the same. Remember the fork legs have to be parallel to work.

Check my post on the YZ kits we are making. The YZ250F forks have a lower bearing ID of 30mm OD is 52mm Depth of 15mm, Upper is same apart from 28mm ID. We are making kits for fitting them at last. I'm about to fit Whysubs and my forks to our frames...starting a new project bike.

ALL YZ250F forks 01-06 are what you need to find!

Forgot to add, the bearings are a nightmare to find to fit to the MZ chassis with the YZ forks, we have sourced a bearing and making fitting kits so you can buy everything from us, remove the YZ bearings and smack your new forks straight into the MZ frame....sorted! Tried it today at work....spacer kits will be available very soon....

Mark the spacer is a pain. And the solution Slipstream has, as usual, been at the forefront. In the states fasrnu would know!
Hey fasrnu, hope all's well!
Highest Regards, to all!
Rob, the slower one :D

No worries mate. Once the kits are ready and i've tested them i can ship some over for you guys...no worries. STMZ-2 on the build right now! A much tamer version but i might use the aluminium tank from the race bike and the aluminium rear sub-frame! The YZ fork conversion will look sweet...think i might have the yolks painted though!!!! :-D
