Brake Switches

So I need to replace both of my Baggy's brake light switches, front and rear. I know the rear is from a KTM, but what year and model? I don't know anything about the front one. Any thoughts or suggestions?

According to previous posts on this site, the REAR brake light switch is the same as on a 1998 KTM LC4. Note that I've never actually tried to fit one, though, so I make no guaranties about the truth of that statement.

These guys: http://cyclehuttktm.com/ sell the KTM part on their website as part no. 50311051100 for $22.20 plus $8.00 shipping. Probably worth a shot, if you're desperate and want it quickly. FWIW, the KTM part looks the same as the MZ version.

BTW, you should still be able to get the MZ version of the part from either of these sources:

1. SF Moto in San Francisco. They're great guys and are willing to order anything that's still available. They usually charge a fair price, given that they have to source everything from Germany. Whenever I need a part, and I'm not sure that I can get an aftermarket version from a trusted U.S. source, I go to SF Moto first.

2. Graham's in the U.K., which comes highly recommended by the Brits on this site for hard to find MZ parts, shows the rear brake switch on their website for sale here: http://www.grahamsmotorcycles.com/grahams_motorcycles%20Parts%20list%20Baghira%20Mastiff.htm. The price they're asking converts to about $23.76. I've heard that they'll ship to the U.S., but I've never tried before, so I can't say for sure whether they will or how much they'd charge. If they do, for that price, even if shipping from UK makes it a bit more than the KTM solution above, having the part that you know is correct is probably worth a few bucks more.

As I said, if you're desperate and need it quickly, you might give the KTM part a shot. But if you can wait a week or so, I'd try SF Moto first to see how much they'd charge to get it from Germany. If they can't help, or can only get it for an outrageous price, I'd then try Graham's.

hydraulic brake light switches are just that, hydraulic brake light switches. They ain't KTM or BMW or XYZ brand motorcycle parts. All they need to have is the right thread and that is either M10x1 (Brembo and also standard) or M10x1.25 (Japanese standard and also Grimeca). Any dealer and probably any car parts source will have them. Yamaha dealers will probably have both both sizes since Yamaha owns Brembo and uses Brembo parts to a certian extent. BMW uses Brembo parts. So do KTM and Aprilia(mostly).

At the front, you can also use a hydraulic switch if getting the lever switch proves to be difficult. HIgh-end radial pumps most often use inline hydraulic switches in fact. You can use the same switch as the one for the rear brake.

Lever switches are almost always found only on that particular type of brake pump and often differ from model to model of the same manufacturer. The switch of a Brembo PS16 is entirely different from that of a Brembo PSC16.

If youre interested I spoke to Grahams motorcycles this week, they deliver anywhere in the world - not sure of charges but if their UK delivery charges are anything to go by (£1.50) I dont think the charges would be that bad. He's clarified he has most common parts on the shelf and can post out straight away, if he doesnt have them he will get them direct from MZ within 7 days.

Very helpful too and has loads of info on compatible parts too.

I picked up the FRONT brake lamp switch at my local KTM dealer for $9.00. They used the same Domino controls on their late 90's dual sport bikes. They had it in stock.

Do you know the model of KTM that the front switch came from? There's a KTM dealer just 10 minutes away from me, so that's probably the best route for me to go.

I got the goods, went to the KTM dealer as I needed both front and back switches as well. They had a used front that I got for 1/2 off and ordered a new front and rear.
