Need new battery for 2002 Skorpion Tour. New owner. Help!

Postby JP Alexander » Sat Jun 14, 2008 6:52 pm

Hi Group,

My new, (no receipt), gel Bike Master BTX7L-BS that was just purchased before I bought the bike is dead. Could anyone confirm that the Yuasa # YB7L-B battery listed for my 2002 Skorpion Tour is correct? I would like to find a gel battery, (not taking any chances with Bike Master again) but am having trouble finding batteries listed for my MZ. Anyone who can recommend a battery that's worked out well for them and could include the battery number, I would appreciate it. I'll be heading out tomorrow looking for one locally. Looks like I'm keeping this bike, the Tour in Philadelphia. Thanks, Jim.

Hi Jim,
Glad to hear you are keeping the tour !
This spring when my Baghira needed a battery i took the measurements of the old one intending to get a replacement at wallmart/kmart/lowes or wherever i could find one that fit, then i remembered i had one from my Aprilia and it was a tight fit but has been fine for 3 months now.

Any 12 volt battery that fits and your good to go,they all seem to get a couple of years anyway, good luck

Thanks Iceman,

for reminding me I haven't done too much thinking "outside of the box" lately, usually just look for exact replacement parts. I'll be carrying my old battery around today looking for one similar in size. I would like to take off the evap cannister but does anyone know what I should do with the two hoses that connect to it?

Jim.

Just plug them,i would think.
or if the end of the one travels down to the ground away from the bike connect them together.Whichever works with no ill effects.

I can tell you that on a 1996 Skorpion, the right battery should be YB9L-B. (9Ah. Size in milimeters: length 137, width 76 and height 141.)
Among the letters in the code for the batteries, I think the "L" is most important as it says "minus to the left and plus to the right".

(This link is in Swedish but hopefully you could get parts of the message. MZ-riders are clever, aren't they?)

YB7L-B will also fit (it's 6 milimeters lower), but it is weaker, and that we don't like.
The only problem with YB9L-B is that it's a bit odd size, far from every dealer have it.
For more "modern" types of batteries I think you have to improvise a bit. But on a sealed battery you don't have to bother about the ventilation tube.

Nils,

don't think my PM to you worked so I'll post it here... Thanks much for your information. I found the battery available here in US and am ordering it today.

Best regards, Jim.
