Fuel pump .......what for???

Postby Linegeist » Mon Jun 23, 2008 3:23 am

I'm trying hard to figure this out, gents ......................

Just out of curiosity I rigged a direct feed yesterday, from the tank's fuel tap to the carb inlet - and then took the bike out for a test run - with no discernible difference. The fuel tank is above the carb float bowl by several inches - the same as every British bike I've ever owned - so why do I need a fuel pump when a gravity feed seems to do just as well?

If simpler is better - and bits like fuel pumps cost a lot of money over a whole production run - why on earth did MuZ fit one of the things to the Skorps? It seems pretty much redundant to my tiny mind................... :? :?

the answer is real simple: they were not bright enuf to order the XTZ engines from Yamaha without the fuelpump. The XTZ needs the pump and the engines come off the assembly line complete with pump.
OTOH, the SZR engine which was built in Italy does not have the fuel pump although the bike needs one. THe pump is mounted separately on hat bike and the last version had an electric pump. Belgarda managed to make amore usuable longer 2st gear, too, for the SZR. Would have been just right for the Sorpion as well and is one o the things that quite often gets rebuilt. As said, MuZ was just too dense(Lazy? too German?) to order the engine that way they wanted it or to order it from Belgarda to begin with.

Bottom line, the fuel pump is totally useless as you have correctly found out. Good conscientious MZ dealers removed the pump as a matter of course before selling the bike to start with.

Thanks again Bill ... you really are a mine of information.

Well - I've removed the fuel-thing ... and the bike runs just fine. Weird approach to production techniques from MuZ there.......!!!

Most un-German.......
