made a start on my chain /sprocket installation today... give the front gearbox end a good degreasing, reassembled the chain guide back on the swingarm, put on the fronnt sprocket, great same size 15 teeth. took off rear wheel, degreased swingarm, wheel, sprocket carrier. went to put new rear on, Guess what....?

Wrong size major size difference. original sprocket as fitted new to bike i bought bike with 2,000 miles on it, and it looked like it was original sprocket... is 43 teeth is this right ? ...

my new sprocket as supplied by wemoto, as standard kit is 47 teeth that's 4 teeth bigger... chain supplied by wemoto is 114 link's....

absolutely no way the chain will fit.....

what are the best options for me....?

get a smaller front sprocket i.e. 14 teeth cost of about £10 ?

longer chain maybe 116 links and send the other chain back ?

or anyone like to comment on what to do....

cant be arsed to take the back wheel off again to change the sprocket agaIN,, OR IS THAT MY BEST OPTION GET THE RIGHT SIZE SPROCKET....

43 teeth is this right ?

any advice Alun

Al,
the standard SM runs 15/43 which is to high and doesn't allow the engine to pull cleanly through the gears but the standard enduro model runs 15/45 which is far better, if you put 15/47 on all that will happen is you'll pull daft wheelies ( fine when you're 16) and you'll stretch your new chain in no time at all. What you want to achieve is a ratio of 1-3 (15/45), I tried 14/45 and found it just revved the nuts of the engine and generaly gave poor performance.
Wemoto supply a c+s kit for the enduro with the correct chain size.

If you want to pull wheelies all the time join the circus with the other clowns!!

Good luck........Hutchy

p.s your bike is very clean and pretty, maybe it needs more riding than polishing!!!

Hutchy,

thanks for that, will get in touch with wemoto and ask them if they can take the chain back. as it is to short and get a 45 tooth sprocket at least then i got the 47 tooth to try first to see how daft it is then get the 45 tooth on. once i have had my fun....

About the chain, the one wemoto supplied was 114 link which would have fitted fine if i had the standard sprocket 43 tooth. do you reckon i should go for a 118 link chain for my setup with 47 tooth, then shorten it to acommodate the 45 ?

I cant understand why wemoto supplied me a chain to short, and a 47 tooth rear surely they must have known what to send ?

Thanks hutchy on that, will let you know how i get on....

HI alun

If I was you I'd go for the longer chain, don't bother with the lower gearing, it just wrecks the perfomance as you seem to lose all the torque and top end speed which does sound a bit contradictory but that is what I found and I'm also getting better MPG with 15/45 and a BSM end can :D

I chained my rear sprocket to 47. I think my bike came with a 43. I also boight it from wemoto. The chain fits just fine and I believe the chain is probably the orginal on my bike. Maybe check that wemoto have sent you the correct chain first? They are usually top notch/100% correct but they are human

Good luck dude

I think you'd have to go down a tooth at the front and up a coupel at the rear so... 14/47

sent my chain back yesterday, still waiting on the new one to be delivered and a replacement additional sprocket of 45 teeth. I will have the choice then of hooligan wheely popping 47 tooth rear, or sedate 45 tooth sensible option. Spoke to Jan and mike, from wemoto, and they both seem great company to deal with. very apologetic about sending me the wrong kit. Will use them again.

keep you all posted....

fitted my chain and sprocket, had to take 1link and 1/2 from a 118 link chain running with 47 tooth rear, and 15 tooth front. had a problem getting the split link outer plate on as real tight fit. I have used the outer plate off the one that a ground off. bit unsure whether to ride with it yet as thought i'd seek advice first off here. Did phone my local bike shop that provided me with the proper d.i.d split link, and he said to enlarge the hole in the plate slightly as they are all very tight. Is this o.k. to do ?

I am not going to use the bike until i get some advice off someone ?

I wouldn't drill out the link. They are supposed to fit tightly. If you drill it out so that it's got play, it's only going to wear out the pin faster. Loose parts move, and metal moving against metal is bad. Even if you have to tap the pin into the plate, I'd leave it the way it is. It will eventually work itself in.

BTW, with a good chain tool/press, I wouldn't worry about having two master links on a chain. I've added links to a chain before using an extra master link, and I've never had a problem. If the pins are peened onto the links correctly., they should be as strong as the other links.

Hi Al

Don't drill out the link, they are a bugger to fit but as you've already been told they are meant to be, you will probably need a proper tool to push it into place but providing you peen the ends over properly it will be fine

Sorted, mole grips and a nut squeezed the side plate on and put on the clip. Jobs a good 'un

took bike for a run yesterday and i must say the acceleration is real fearce, 1st gear is a bit of a waste of time. but the acceleration from 50 to 80 mph is awesome. I followed a couple of bikes yesterday cb1300 honda, and a750 something. quick flick of the wrist and 50 to 80 its like i riding a two stroke the power always seems to be on tap, I would highly recommend anyone giving the 47 /15 tooth gearing a go. top speed I had yesterday was 90mph. Sure it would have gone a bit more but will wait until road and wether conditions are better. my top speed has not altered that much. Just seems as though the engine is revving more.

I am going to stick with this for a few weeks, and maybe try the 45 tooth sprocket i got as well..

Definitely worth the wait for the longer chain.

Also seems to be more managable in town with this gearing. will pull 30mph in fifth gear with not to much trouble.....

ALun..... :D

funmonkee,

i went for the d.i.d kit. from wemoto. i got them to send me a 45 tooth rear as well as the 47 just in case i dont get on with the 47. 118link chain. speak to jan (pronounced yan) or mike and tell them you sent Alun a kit last week. they are good company. the chain i had came with split link not the rivetty type. Only thing was, i wish i could have got hold of a gold x-ring off them but not in stock.....

go for it real nice with the 47 tooth rear....
