What's the Skorp's lower shocker bearing the same as, gents?

Postby Linegeist » Wed Mar 11, 2009 12:02 pm

It looks like I'll be pulling out my recently serviced swing arm again to do a photoshoot on it in a week or so and, while I'm at it, I might as well replace the lower bearing which I noticed is getting a little rough. It'll be good to show folks how a bearing's pressed out - and in again. So, I need a new one.

Presumably this is the same as a Yamaha part ....? Or is life going to get difficult suddenly ..............?

And who's most likely to have it if it's a MuZ part?

Ta in advance. :smt007

Grahams for MuZ parts. They seem to either have in stock or can get from the factory almost all parts still.

http://www.grahamsmotorcycles.com/

or http://www.grahamsmotorcycles.com/MZ%20 ... 0STRUT.htm
for the bearings.

YIKES!!!!

Lower shock bearing assy, comprising:-

    9013131000 BALL BEARING £59.02 each

    9013127000 SHAFT SEAL x 2 £5.15 each

    9013107000 SCREW x 1 £5.53 each

Well, the parts are on their way to me - but that's a lot of beer tokens for one teensy joint. I'd hate to have to replace the lot. Maybe this is a lesson to look after that suspension rear end ... eh?

That lower bearing must be replaceable with something else!!! :? :?

That spherical bearing was one of the first of very few problems I ever had. Looked for as standard replacement from bearing supplier (non standard size),so replaced it with a aluminium bronze bearing and grease nipple in the arm, hardened steel bush and made a new bolt and nut to suit, to clamp it all together. No problem now pump in a little grease each service. All the needle rollers appear to be standard bearing sizes, seals can be replaced with standar O-rings.

I had something like that going through my mind Russell ..... the rest of the bearings are going to need replacing sometime in the next year or so, and Ilm buggered if I'm going to shell out that kind of dosh for each one...... <GULP!> Thanks for the info.

Did you turn your own bushes or is a replacement available off the shelf? I haven't used my lathe in over 4 years (unheated workshop and advancing years) and while I'll happily drill and tap for a few grease nipples I'd prefer an off the shelf route for the rest if poss.

I made the bearing and bits myself as I do for most of the parts on my bikes that ever need repair. I'm of the opinion that somebody made it in the first place and being an experienced fitter / machinist, why not. Usually end up with a better product.

My experience was that the spherical one was dreadful and the others were not too bad and even better from a bearing factor. Changed the lot at the one time.
All the best

Excellent news! :smt004

Just out of bloody-minded curiosity, looking at this lower joint, rose-bearing thingy - why does it have to be such a complex piece of engineering? All 59 quid's worth!!

The shocker only deflects vertically and fore and aft as far as I can see, so there are no diagonal forces on the lower yoke, no twisting moment, just good old fashioned up 'n down - so the shock's not going to be under any undue stresses. So why not just press-fit a rubber bush like cars do (I have one that would fit perfectly with about 2 minute's work on reaming a few thou out of the alloy crescent ("Crescent"?? What was the parts guy smoking when we thought that description up??? :-D ))

It seems needless complexity for ne reason - or have I missed something you experienced guys know - and that I don't?

I agree, no need for a spherical bearing at the lower end as any deflection is taken care of at top end in the rubber bushing, so thats why I put in the plain bearing at the lower end. All the other bearings have been OK, only starting to show a little grooving at the last check a 100,00klms. Most likely replace them next major service at 120,000, clean and repack with grease every 20,000. Also thought about putting in a rubber bushing at the lower end but I had materials to hand for the bronze bush.

What is this 'BS' talk about advancing years, same age as me, and I don't feel advanced. Anyway I suppose it is starting to warm up enough over there for you to throw the blanket off your knees and start riding again, just starting to cool down here and be comfortable out on the road. It has been hot and humid this year and a real hassle to get all geared up to go riding,OK on the move but cook if held up in traffic. Best of luck with your rebuild of the suspension.

Apologies for the resurrection of a long dead thread, but I've found a replacement spherical bearing that's easily obtained and sensibly priced.

It's a:
GE12PB Steel / Phosphor Bronze Spherical Plain Bearing 12x26x16x12mm.

I got mine from Simply Bearings (UK), cost is £22 delivered.

Unlike the standard bearing it's got a central grease channel, so I've fitted a grease nipple to the crescent. Fitting the bearing was simple enough with a suitable sized drift.

Don't be tempted to fit an IKO GE12G. They're cheaper, but don't have a wide enough central support.

'arry.
