Squirming with a pillion

Postby Old Dog » Fri Mar 13, 2009 10:30 am

My mate, who incidently is a rider of many years experience asked for lift into town this morning. Nothing technical just a couple of downhill miles if that. So off we went and I was amazed, as he was, at how squirmy the Skorpion became with a pillion. Once he got off she was back to her beautiful self. Total weight 18 stone plus or minus.

Any thoughts - preload on the rear springs to mind?
All the best

I do a lot of carrying a pillion with my daughter and set preload to 2nd or 3rd notch on the spring and up the rear tyre pressure to 38-40psi., depending on weight of my passenger or gear I am carrying. Worn rear tyre can make problem worse.Get the passenger to lean forward against you and they tend to move with you and not fight against the lean.

i hate riding an experienced rider behind me ...even with my safe riding past ...
the experienced riders pucker factor is to high and we both wind up steering the bike

a total newbie is less of a hassle because the crap is being scared out of him and when you say set still dam it
he does !

but i ride some one back there so seldom any more that its a shock to my system
the wife has a bad back and a metal frame in her back so falling off a motorcycle is not an option
for her and she has been back there once or twice since 1998 ( both cars in repair shop)

Never been a problem with my other half on the back. Bit heavier at slow speeds but once on the move no problems. WE have managed a tour to Spain and France, with all the gear and it went like a dream.

I always pump up the rear tyre to the recommended 42psi whenever we go out together.
