Carb Cleaner Warning!

Postby Norman Wade » Sun Jul 19, 2009 7:22 am

I recently bought a product called 'Mean Machine Choke and Carburetor Cleaner' in one of those 'everything for a pound' shops. (I'm in the UK). I don't know what solvents are in it, but it will immediately strip the paint from the plasticwork of a Skorpion. As Skorpions are painted with standard VW car paint, this product will probably strip the paint from numerous cars and bikes, so take care.
Luckily, I only spilled some on the underside of a 'spare' tank, but it could have been much worse!!

Hi David,
Colours from the Skorpion parts book: The first three digits are MZ's ordering code, and some of the colours have their RAL number (Standard colours used in the paint industry).

190 dark black RAL 9005
200 mint green RAL 6029
220 traffic white RAL 9016
240 signal yellow RAL 1003
270 aquablue, pearly C5U
280 brilliant black metallic A9V
290 classic green pearly C6V
350 bordeaux, pearly C3Y
360 tornado red Y3D
370 turquoise metallic B6T
380 blue pearly LZ5M
390 green classical C6U
400 orange RAL 2008
A10 avant garde blue KI2NM6B
A20 cobre natural ICI ELT2B
A30 flintback metallic NH526M-4
A40 ferrari red 304
A50 light red mica ICI7KW6B
A60 Iceland metallic ICI8MT1B
B10 cup green/white polished
900 special finish

Not sure which yours might be, but as the paint used was standard VW/Audi colours, a local dealer might be able to help. I found this website: http://www.vwbooks.co.uk/vw_info/vw_T4_Colours.pdf which gives colours used by VW/Audi (in the UK at least), and as you can see, some of the codes match those used by MZ. An auto paint shop might also be able to help.
The question is - what exactly is 'dark black'? And are there blacks which aren't dark?
