Baggy prob - won't start

changed fuel
changed spark plug
tested spark plug..getting a good strong spark
tried to bump start it down a very long hill -no joy
is getting fuel... splug smells of fuel
engine starts if I spray a ..little... carb cleaner in the carbs... well it roars to life, then cuts

Anyone give me any advice on what else I can try.? I've not used the baggy for 6 weeks (oops)...
even a link to how to clean the carbs properly would be helpful

still no joy
so far i've:-

drained the carbs
cleaned the cabrs with cleaner
changed the plug
checked the spark is strong
opened the carbs and checked they are clean
charged the battery for days
no further forwards
it turns over fine
startts if I spray carb clener or wd40 in the carbs
petrol is getting to the plug
no blocks on the fuel inlet
I'm stumped. What else can I try?

Hi,
Have you done a compression test with a high gauge. If nothing else if it passes it will reassure you that there is adequate compression available. It's easy enough,all you do is screw the gauge into the spark plug hole and with a fully charged battery fully open the throttle and turn over the engine until you get a peak value on the guage.
If there is no compression then you have to do a leak down test.
I did all of the above when my RT125 wouldn't start. Turned out one off the exhaust valves was leaking due to carbon deposits on the valve seat. I had to remove the head and get the valves re-seated. Runs OK now thank god.
It can't hurt to do the test.

The fact that it will start with carb cleaner / WD then i would asume that the comp / spark are OK, i know that if my bike doesn`t start first time and floods then no amount of bumping and turning over will get it to start until i replace the plug again. I would remove the carbs and give them a good clean as if the pilot jet circuit is blocked then nothing will shift it except for compressed air or a pin. My bike runs rich and if i try to start it , even with a slight throttle opening then it will flood and not start until the plug is replaced ??

Ps - the float bowl on the primary carb can be removed with the carb in place ,just. This will let you remove the pilot jet and clean it but just watch the float bowl gasket on refitting.

starts on wd40 !
dirt in carb jets
or a bad tank of gas
i have had the rt125 with 2 tanks of bad fuel this summer
and the traveller 1 tank
had to rinse the tanks and use HEET brand fuel treatment what a pain

Throttle was stuck open.... sorted now. Thanks for your help. I had to remove the carbs and give them a good clean. Found the valve was opening and not returning closed. Lubed that up and now is fine :D

^ yeah, but an easy fix once you've got the carbs off the bike. I took the top bolt off the subframe; pushed the sub frame away a little and managed to pull the rubbers off the carbs, then rotate and pull the carbs off the engine...takes about 10 minutes (I've done it twice now).

On the plus side; I know now a bit more about how the bike works and cleaned up some of the top engine casings while I was there. Is it just me or are singles easier to understand and work with that V4's etc... I'd be apprehensive to take the FI system of my busa or mess about with the carbs on the vmax...

the bikes are just to complex any more
one of the past owners of my 660 had cut air box in to 2 pieces left in the part holding the battery
and put k and n filters on it-- i did not like the intake noise and it not wanting to run proper in a rain storm
fellow i bought it from gave me the air box piece and i glued the mess back together
then the fun getting it back in the bike had to split the frame in the middle what a mess
took 3 hard days to fix something that should have never been modified to start with

Good advice on the Baggy...got to be the carbs..Mixture screw should be at 2.5 turns out to start with,lots of folks set to 3-5 turns..

Dave,do you still have the K&N's? I'll be happy to take themm off your hands..
