Hi there all. I have to replace the gear lever return spring in a MZ 301 Saxon Tour.
It has low, mileage so I don’t require any replacement of other parts. I just hope to split the engine by pulling off just the RHS crankcase half so I can access the spring on the selector (engine removed from bike). This would leave all the left side, clutch gears etc intact.
My question: Is this possible?
I have removed all the 14 screws and heated the crankcases a bit with boiling water but I cannot get the crankcases to separate, well only about a hairs gap. Does the locating peg (tube) for the front bolt need to knocked through first?
Do I have to use the special tool or can it be done or have I missed anything more to release?
Any tips for separating the crankcases will be most welcome. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Jim. Thank you so very much indeed. The Hungarian MZ site is truly wonderful, one of the most comprehensive bike sites on the web. It’s a pity that more of it is not in English. I found the video Download area and had to spend an hour or two finding an AVI video player download so I could play them. The videos are utterly superb and explain every detail. I will have no trouble carrying out any work on my engine now. I will make up a crankcase puller from a length of steel bar and use 2 x 10mm bolts and 4 x nuts so I won’t have to bash the crankcases apart.

Hello Les, glad I could help. I would just add that I have never found the need for a crankcase splitter using the oven method. They just fall apart. It is pretty random but usually the mains stay on the crank.
Do not try to split the cases cold. You will damage the mains , the bearing seats and probably the crankcases.

i have worked on bmw's for years and there cases are happy when heated to remove things like the cam and
cranks so my oven in the shop has been used a lot but not in several years
wife even lets me use the one up stairs some times

if you use the oven method all the seals have to be replaced I would think?

oven temp should stay below 100 deg c or 212 f
then seals may still be good
the idea is expand the case not the bearings on the crank or transmission shafts
so too long in oven is not good
there may be a note in an mz manual some where but i have never seen it
