1993 ETZ301 queries

Postby beerbunny » Fri Jul 09, 2010 7:48 am

Hi all,

I've just acquired a 1993 ETZ301. I haven't really got to grips with it yet, but I have a few queries;

Does anybody have any info (does any info exist?) on the electronic ignition fitted as standard on these bikes?

Ditto for the electronic regulation.

The engine is pretty rough and gutless below 3000rpm (compared with my Supa 5). Is this normal?

Thanks,

John Jones

Hi,
I think the ignition may be made by PVL depending on the year of manufacture. If you could post some photo's of the alternator with the chain cover removed it would help in identification. There where many different types fitted over the years. Regulation is built into the alternator.

Regarding performance have you checked that the carb jets are the standard size and that the exhaust is also standard? Is the exhaust leaking?

David.

I'll take a photo as soon as I've plucked up the courage to remove the full fairing. There's the usual bird's nest of bodged wiring with extra wires for accessories which were removed before the seller parted with the bike, and I need to try to sort it all out before removing the fairing.

I can't check the carb jetting because, although the bike is fitted with a Bing, there's nothing in the handbook (or the Haynes manual) that even mentions a Bing carb in connection with the 301. I'm going to have to get a copy of the original workshop manual through the MZRC Regalia section.

I doubt if the jetting has been messed with, as the seller was in his mid sixties, had had the bike from new and generally didn't strike me as the type to go delving into that kind of stuff. Having said that, I'm also in my mid sixties and I'm quite often muck about with carbs and jets etc, so maybe I've got that wrong. I'll certainly check as soon as I've got something to check against.

The silencer appears to be standard and there are no leaks anywhere in the exhaust system.

I haven't looked at the air filter yet; possibly it's due for a change.

I've had a look at the mz-b website, but didn't find anything useful. I've got one of the Power Dynamo 12 volt alternator and CD ignition setups on my Supa 5 and its the Bee's Bollocks. If I could afford £200, I'd get one for this bike too. Highly recommended.

Speaking of electrics, I think the wiring on this bike needs a good going-over. I'm not a big fan of MZ's practice of leaving connectors unshielded. There's a lot of corroded connections, and that's just under the seat. I doubt if things will be any better elsewhere on the bike.

Ho hum, onwards and sideways.

Cheers,

John
