luggage rack for Skorpion Sport vs Tour - subframe question

Postby MattyP » Tue Oct 05, 2010 9:34 am

All,

I found a U.S. distributor (from a British company:Motohaus Powersports Limited, us dist:http://www.ventura-mca.com/) for luggage racks that fit the MZ 1000 and the skoprion sport.

My question is whether the sport and tour subframe are similar enough for this rack to work easily. So, any input?

I exchanged e-mails with this company last year when looking into a rack for my Tour. They said the L-brackets would fit and the PDF instructions I received sure look like they will. I didn't order at that time...
Shoot me a PM if you want a copy of the PDF.

So Bill,

Who did you wind up going to for your rack? Any comments on it?

Got a CorTec trunk bag on the pillion, then we flooded and I got the Traveller.
Still thinking about one of these for the Traveller, depends on how much touring I can see doing.

Bill,

I have a soft trunk and saddlebags now that are pretty passable. But I'm planning a nice big long trip next Spring and wanted to increase my carrying capacity and have some flexibility for attaching multiple bags for many days of riding. These venture systems seem pretty spendy, and while reviewing the pdf you sent I noticed that the recommended weight capacity for the main supports ('l brackets') is only 20 lbs. That's awful low - considering that the trunk bags alone probably range from 3-7 lbs - fill that bag with some food/water and some clothes and suddenly you're topped out... Seems like I can cram as much weight into a pillion/tail bag as the bike will support.

If you've only got 20 lbs to work with then there's no space for running drugs or exotic animals - how is one supposed to fund a cross country tour w/o being able to carry his/her blackmarket goods?

all bikes almost always say 20 lb on rack and bags
i probably leave the house over loaded even on town trips

and my tool roll is most of the problem
it went up 5lb when i added the big wrenches to adjust the chain in 2002
always had BMW before that

Another reason I didn't jump at buying one then (forgot that part). Lots of money for very little change in capacity (if you follow the rules)
I used the Cortec when I rode the Traveller home from New Hampshire. Didn't even have anything in the hard bags... :D
I was thinking that having the vertical portion of the Venture rack would give me somewhere to easily mount a back-packing tent and sleeping bag (both would be under 20#s) and still have the pillion clear for the Cortec.
I'm also cheap enough to take that example and make something up out of aluminum tubing for a lot less cash...got a friend with a MIG welder and tubing bending tools...
