Skorpion Shift lever

Postby basser23 » Sun Oct 31, 2010 7:09 pm

I have been wanting to try a direct shift lever on my Skorpion for quite awhile now. Bill J recommends an XT lever which needs bending and shortening, fair enough,
easy to do etc..I found on a Belgian blog site..bloggen.be, a built up Skorpion that is georgeus and has an aluminum lever made by Posh in Thailand. This lever is made to fit a pit bike with 11mm splines,is available in red, blue,or silver anodized. Also available with 12 or 13mm splines. length has a 20mm adjustment also.
Found it on ebay..bought it for 6.90 quid(about $10 us) and was shipped...total was $17 and change.
Well when I received it, I was a bit disapointed,as it is fairly crude, but it looks pretty good..but.due to the cheap socket head bolts and a machine screw that holds the
peg on,I decided to change them out for more robust ones in stainless, from my local hardware store.
What happened was when I mounted it, the clamp portion would not squeeze the shaft tight enough, further tightening was needed, when I went to remove the
bolt, the socket head stripped due to soft materials.....argh...had to hack saw the mount bolt and remove it...that was easy as the material is soft...
so off to the store for a couple 6mmx20mm x100 pitch bolts and a nylock nut for the shaft mount bolt. Tomorrow I'll get some smaller ones for the clamp that secures the adjustable lever to the shaft mount.
I decided to extend the peg a bit by using a delrin spacer about 1/2 in width , this brings the peg out a bit so it is easier to align one's left foot for shifting.
Also wrapped the peg with bicycle handlebar tape to ensure non slippage and it looks good. Think it is made with neoprene....
All bolts where tightened and I used a bit of Blue Locktite to be sure....
So how does it work? VERY nice...!!!! What a difference!!! Upshifts are very positive and quick..no sloppy linkage, flicking it up to shifit gets down is equally nice!!
It does change the pattern to GP style with 1 up,4 down...I wrote a reminder which is on my tach face....:)
We'll see how well it holds up....
but for now I must say it has transformed the shifting effort ..

What I also like about it is the fact that you can change the lever portion if it gets bent,..just cut a lever from alu stock, drill 3 holes and bend to suite..back in business..

Very good in the end.
Congrats.
It's like I have continually maintained. 1st gear up is so much more natural and the direct lever makes a big difference, at least compared to 2nd and third rate OEM stuff. I persoannly use an MZ ET175 lever, not one from Yamaha, on my SZR.
I admit that I don't have a direct lever mounted any more on my Skorpion. Most will have noted that I have the Gilles rearsets and they have NO slop at all, so the only slop you get is that of the Yamaha transmission itself and you have that with the direct lever as well. And I have Gilles' Rollnase(=free revolving toe peg) which is a dream.

It is hard-anodized and revolves freely around the centerbolt. BTW you can also see that the engine lever has two lengths, the foot lever 3, and the nose itself als has three positions. You can set from nearly no movement to quite a lot as well as to fit the toe of the boot. And of course 1st up or down. Needless to say, I have 1st up. They are also pretty strong; you can see that the peg has grounded but you'll be hard put to find any other damage. Nothing broken. In the meantime I have changes back to the old style peg which I much prefer.

The newer are lighter and smaller:

While I have the dealer CD in the drive, here are the GP Light clipons I keep recommending:

that is how they are delivered, complete with long allenhead wrench.

Thanks for the reply Bill...Those Gillles are beautiful! Next on my winter list will be the rear set brackets, and a new decent brake pedal.
Guess some yamaha pedal will work...by the way,SZR's over here are very rare,so aquiring pedals from them is very difficult...hello ebay
I will most likely take the pattern you posted for the bracketry and cut some out...will reseach the pegs and brake lever first..

Hey Bill,
That's the one! If you get one be sure to replace all the bolts with a higher grade steel...the bolts are REAL soft. I used stainless socket head. 6mm x20 1.0 pitch
for the shaft bolt, and used a nylok nut as added security. The peg used a 25mm long 6mm 1.0 pitch..mainly cause I got the last 20mm long bolt.
The lever bolts are 5mmx16x .8 pitch. Neat part is it fits so well,no mods at all...
Dash is waiting for a speedo mount to arrive from Sigma, other than that I've just repacked the Holeshot can and have been riding ALOT...
