Another annoying problem

Hi Guys,

My bikes really winding me up now. Heres what its doing:

about a month ago it wouldnt start on the starter button as the cable was too tight, ive sorted this one out now.

Today i took it for its 1st run in a week. I travelled around 4 miles to my local shops with it running ok, it had two misfires when i changed from 1st to second in the normal rev range as i wasnt trying to rag it getting around the car park of the shops.

I started driving back home and within half a mile it was mis-firing every time it was close to idle speed. I though right ill just keep the revs up then. As a result it worked for another 30 seconds then died as i went to take off from traffic lights in 1st. By this point the engine was getting rather warm. I then got it going again for it to break down 100m down the road. I treid starting using the starter but had no luck. I walked it a little way and found a hill and bump started it and all seemed well until i hit traffic lights again. It would occasionally start when i hit the starter but not all the time. I repeated the stopping and starting process over and over about 10 times just hoping to get it home then it gave up on me. The engine was cooked and so was the clutch, it was engaged partially even when fully pulled in.

I spoke to my local bike garage who wanted a silly amount of money to pick it up and take it 4 miles so i decided to let it cool down for 20 mins. I started up and got to traffic lights 100m from my house where it conked out. I pushed it back home

Has anyone any idea what it may be? could it be a blocked carb from sitting around with not much use?

Blocked carb is the first thing that comes to mind. My Skorpion had very similar behavior. The float valve filter screen was filthy...good clean and it's doing well...so far...

Yes, sound like the 'secret filter' fitted to the float valve. Clean the carb out, remove the floats, undo the cross head screw next to the float valve and pull the valve out with pliers. You'll find the filter on top of it.
Give it a clean and refit the carb. If you don't know the carb settings, download the manual here: http://www.mzskorpion.net/page10.htm
It's best to fit an inline filter into the fuel line, as this is easier to clean than the 'secret filter'.

Thanks for the advice Bill & Norman,

David said it might be due to old fuel as the petrol right at the bottom of the tank that i believe is around 2 months old now. Would it go "off" in that amount of time? I've cleaned carbs before and they havent been too bad, i dont have an air line though. Is there anything to look out for before i take anything off / apart on the Baghira carb?

Sorry for all the questions i just don't want to ruin my bike lol!

I had problems also after my Baghira sat around for a few months unused. I used some carb cleaner and Sea Foam then all was well.

had a very simaler problem on mine last year,turned out to be a loose battery earth terminal connection,try that first as easier than removing carbs,good luck

+1 on the battery cable--I had a Suzuki GS500 that had the same thing happen, with the exact same description as to what happened to you. Started off with a slightly loose connection, and as I rode it more and more, it got looser and looser, until it just wouldn't even make contact. I was totally stranded and had to call a flatbed tow, but fortunately the driver was a fellow rider and told me to pop the seat off. 5 minutes later I was on my way...

In my experience, 2 months isn't nearly long enough for a bike to sit for the carbs to get fouled unless they were already in sad shape. I had my bike last tuned-up a year ago, it's sat for most of that year on a battery tender (maybe 2 or 3 rides), and I fired it up the other day and it ran fine--I didn't even put any stabilizer in the gas tank! I probably will get a lashing now from Dave, but oh well...
