Baghira sidestand switch?

Postby angustoyou » Tue Dec 28, 2010 12:04 pm

Hi all, I hope that someone can confirm my theory, and help me to fix this!

A couple of times now, whilst riding at a steady throtte, the engine has died completely, for about 2 seconds, then run perfectly again.

It happened for the second time this afternoon, and then was fine again.

A couple of junctions from home, the indicators failed to work. When I got home, I washed all the salt off, and started the bike. The left front indicator came on, but didn't flash. I switched off, and switched back on, and the indicators wouldn't light at all.

All the other electrics work, horn, brake lights, headlights, sidelights, tail light, idiot lights etc.

Having done some searching on here, Relay 19, for the side stand switch would seem to be the problem. I have no problem in removing it, or bypassing it,

If this is the case, I have a couple of questions, (I'm not good on electrics) before I brave the cold garage and have a look.

1) Where on the bike is the relay? I believe it's under the seat, but I think that there are more than one under the seat.

2) My (German) wiring diagram says it's a stop relay, so does it also stop the bike when the kill switch is used, or the clutch is engaged with the sidestand down?

3) rt/ws and rt/sw on the wiring diagram, is this red/white and red/black?

My plan is to remove or bypass the relay alltogether if it's not needed. Any reason not to, and do I just connect the 2 x rt/ws to the rt/sw?

Thanks in advance!

no reaon on earth!

just connect the two wires going to the switch.
My 94 Skorpion Tour has been that way from day one (bought back then new) because I flatly refused to buy it until the dealer shorted the switch.
My green Skorpion never had one.

Thanks Bill, that's what I did on my CCM404, rather than mess with the relays.

I think that it's always worth checking with the experts first! :smt023

Over here, many bridge the damn thing by making a "plug". It is necessary for MOT so they plug in the switch for inspection and put their bridge plug back in right afterwards. I took the route of making the side stand fold up. by itself.
But only for MOT. I just replaced the M8 axle bolt with one 30mm long and -voila- the spring catches behind that bolt. After MOT, the short bolt.

The damn switch is infamous in the SRX clan for causing problems such as contact bouncing causing misfiring and dying on the highway.

Ok, that's the sidestand switch wired up, so there should be no more cutting out. The indicators seem to have a faulty flasher unit. The unit cam apart as I was removing it, and there was dirt and moisture inside, so figure it may have been shorting. I'm not sure how to test that the power is getting to it though, (indicators on, brown delivers current?)

I can maybe get up to my local bike shop tomorrow, they are good guys, and used to be MZ dealers too, so they should be able to help.

there is nothing MZ-specific about the blinker relay. Any two-wire 12v relay will work - and most of them don't live very long due to the 1-cylinder vibrations. It does help to not fasten the relay but rather to tie it to the next best thicker cable with duct tape or a cable tie.

It's a three wire relay - I guess that these are common too?

And the saga continues...

OK, the relay seems good, I swapped it for an identical one off the CCM, and nothing still.

There really is nothing now though, the indicators don't light at all.

There is power coming into the relay, multimeter negative on the brown (the earth - thanks David-) and indicator switch on, and the multimeter positive on the red and black wire gives a reading of 12.3 v, but nothing seems to be coming out. Multimeter negative on the brown, positive on the blue and black gives a reading of zero.

Shorting the red and black to the blue and black, no indicators come on. I figure that they should all come on at this point.

I stripped and cleaned the switch at the handlebar, all seems ok in there now, it's clean, positive click etc etc.

The wires heading away from the indicators are my next point to check I suppose. The connectors behind the clocks all look clean, and nothing starts to work after a wiggle, so I'm kind of lost now.

Any ideas what to do and where to look next, anyone?

Update - It's fixed.

I beleive that the indicators were down to the switch at the handlebars, all a bit gunged up, and I'd aslso put painted bars on, so perhaps not earthing too well, mixed with damp December weather

I cleaned the switch out - watch out for the ball bearing on the indicator switch! - and it's much better, cleaned off all the paint, and we have success.

We'll see if it cuts out again, now that I've shorted the sidestand switch too. I'm not sure about that, as it wasn't on bumpy roads that it was happening.

Thanks for everyone's input, it's much appreciated. :smt023
